Alternatively with the tyres, mine came as 2 seperate packages as they can only strap 2 tyres together, so including the conti comfort kit i received 3 packages, with 3 different tracking no's.

Potentially Tirerack could split up the invoices, so the value of each package is shown, instead of the entire value, and even delay 1 of the tyre packages by a day to ensure they don't go through together?

an idea anyway.
If you split the ships, make sure they are sent to different addresses (one to work, one to home?).

Customs have the ability to combine to packages to the same address to add duty and GST. I'll find the applicable paper and link it in a sec.

Here you go:

Multiple Packages
Multiple Packages

Consignor is the person or organisation overseas that sends goods (the sender).

Consignee is the person or organisation in Australia that receives the goods (the receiver).

If multiple packages arrive in Australia to the same consignee sent from a single consignor overseas, the value of all packages may be combined for duty and tax assessment purposes (refer to Example 1).

If a parcel, i.e. one consignment addressed to you contains goods or other packages that were imported for other people (such as your friends or relatives) and the parcel has a declared or assessed value exceeding A$1000 you will need to lodge an import declaration and pay the duty, taxes and charges. Customs law does not permit a parcel to be split or broken down into separate packages for assessment, even if those other packages were imported for other people.

Further information on the definition of “consignment” can be found by accessing Australian Customs Notice 2006/59.

Actually, if the amount of your goods (EXCLUDING shipping) exceeds $AUD1,000, then GST + Customs will be paid as a percentage INCLUSIVE of the shipping cost. Quite confusing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's my impression on how it works. i.e. if you have a shipment worth $1,000 with $200 shipping, you pay no tax whatsoever.

However, if your shipment is $1,001 with $200 shipping, tax is NOT calculated as per $1,001 but calculated as per $1,201

How are the RE-11's holding up Craig? I know they're a bit noisy but performance wise I couldn't ask for much more. Unfortunately, they don't come in the size I need for my 19s so I'm changing out to a different tyre.

I'm interested to hear how the DW's hold up, they've got a really good rating on Tirerack website and hold up a lot better than the RE-11's in the wet.

Btw, short answer to your question. If the shipment is under $1000 then no fees apply at all. Cost of shipping is not included.

I reckon you'd be a knowing participant in a tax avoidance scheme.

I look at it simply as: buy from tirerack and save a real shitload on what you'd pay in Aus, whether or not you have to pay duties and taxes. And buy the tyres you want, not simply the tyres that cost you less than $1k.

I like staying off the ATO's radar that's all. Life's too short - just ask Paul Hogan.

I hear you. I reckon the ATO has bigger fish to fry than your tyre import from the USA.

That's how I read it.

@Jeef - yes you are correct. One dollar will mean hundreds.

I'm not avoiding tax at all, I've just spent way too long organizing shipments of boats between Europe and Australia. We knew exactly what we could and couldn't bring in and even with our Australian Sailing Team exemptions, Customs were always on hand to check the containers. They went so far as to check bouyancy tanks and spinnaker bags one year.

We should have a sticky on this since it gets asked so frequently. Tay, maybe you should write up a post that summarises this thread and then PM one of the Mods to sticky it
