It's going in the shop Monday. If I had a lift I would do this myself, I have the knowledge and the tools. I have done stuff like this But, I just turned 61 and I'm getting too old to go crawling under a car on jack stands. My back can't take it anymore.

The place (who works on mostly BMW, VW, Porsche and others) is charging me $600 out the door.

Well, one of the diff bearing fell apart when the installer removed the open diff. Now I'm waiting for new bearings I ordered from MFactory... Strange, car only has 24k on it, did not expect that.. Hoping to get them by Friday or Monday, car is up on their lift waiting for the part.

I spoke with Stef today and he told me he had one new set left so I took them. When he removed the open diff the pass side bearing roller balls fell out of the carrier (for the lack of any other word). I was not there to see this so, can't say much more then that and I never have seen this type of ball bearing so, not sure. He could have damaged it when removing it off the carrier, who knows. I never did an install for a BMW so, I'm in the dark. American muscle cars, yes more then once. You know how that goes, no shop I know of will admit to any wrong doing (except for my friend who does not work on BMW's). Right not I just want to get my hands on the new bearings and get this done.

Im no mechanic and know f'all about bearings but i thought ball race bearings are supposed to come apart from the inner and outer races? Leaving the balls attached to the plastic cage. So unless they fell out of the cage because it was broken?

That would be my guess...

A "pumpkin" includes the diff case as well. What OP has would simply be referred to as "LSD "

Damn that looks very sturdy. If there was a way for this to work with a finned diff cover.........

135droptop > I have my order on deck for the LSD. Going to wait for the shims they're making. That said, based on your experience...what else is needed for the install besides fluid? Any bolts, etc? What's the "roller bearing conversion" and should I do it? Thanks for the informative post.

Based on me just doing the LSD install, you don't need the shims. Everything dropped right in within spec and that's with installing new roller bearings. The 1 series OEM bearings are ball bearings. If you need to replace them for any reason they are almost impossible to get. Next to going to the UK or finding a place in the UK. So, do you need to do them? No but if one happens to get broken doing the removal then you don't have a choice. The ball bearing carrier is made of plastic and can get broken. The roller bearings are all steel. The cost for the rollers are about $200 for the set from MFactory. Fluid can be any good synthetic fluid.

This is the new roller bearings

135droptop > Thanks man, I'll keep that in mind. In terms of the shims, I saw this on n54tech:
http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28168 (Posts: 8).

Granted, it's a different car (335), but just curious if perhaps the same issue could be replicated on the 1-Series. Just doing a little due diligence. I want to do it right the first time you know.

If you're referring too the statement about perfect backlash using the stock shims, yes that's exactly what I had happen. Everything was perfect using the stock shims.

135droptop > Ah ok. So this will not happen to the 1-series? The stock shims are fine?
