JB4 experience
I am thinking about getting the JB4 stage 2 tune from BMS, but I have only had the car for 2 months. My main concern is if the dealer would be able to tell if I had the tune if I were to remove it and then take it in. They advertise that you can delete the tune detected codes so it would be untraceable. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I recently purchased a 135 and bought a JB4 tune kit as well as dual cone intake. Totally worth it! I purchased the system through one of their dealers, Fast Tech Limited (linked here). Jeremy is the owner; give him a call at 614-467-0033.
When I received the system, he even asked when I planned on doing the installation. I did it, had some confusion, sent him a text and he called me to help out. We exchanged a few texts, he sent me e-mails where I could find the information I was looking for (about the different maps and settings that I was having a hard time figuring out). Truly great to work with an fantastic customer service. I've worked with him in the past with data acquisition systems and also had very positive experiences. IF I needed to bring the car into the dealer, I'd do the delete and remove the system. At that point I wouldn't be worried about it. But like I said, give him a call and get his advice and experiences.

From what I understand is that a tune leaves shadow codes that the dealer cannot access without taking the ecu out and sending it to Germany. They can however see how much boost the turbos were getting and that is a dead giveaway. Not sure if this info is correct, I read it on these forums.

I had a coversation with the [very helpful] tech at my BMW dealer.
We were talking and he said his car had a tune on it (I believe the JB4). He also has a 135. I asked about the potential warranty issues and he suggested you remove it before brining the car in for service. He said it is possible to still tell if the car had ever had a tune but it was difficult and unlikely it would get caught. He didin't elobrate any further but I didin't ask either. So you're probably safe if you take the remove it before service but there's always a risk.

Just call anonymously and ask the service MANAGER about all the mods you want to do. That's what I did. Turned out to be a really nice guy. The service counter guys were idiots an assholes but the manager is a nice guy. He said as long as its not something like I went to radio shack or best buy an had them install a radio or alarm and it fried the whole electrical system I should be alright. I've put mine in map 0 every time I've taken it in and never had a problem. A buddy of mine had the n55 an he went in for software update ad it said on his receipt that a tuner was detected. I don't think they flagged it and didn't deny him warranty work either. I would imagine its all up to what kind of dealer you have working for you. My service manager even said to me he knows there are alot of asshole dealers out there that flag everything and try to get out of doing work. He said he's not like that. Call them and see what they say. I didn't tell them my name or anything. I just said I had a car and I want to mod it. What will you do if I bring it in? See what they say.

Dealers around here say that if you keep it at 15 PSI boost or less, there shouldn't be any problems. If you start running more than that and you encounter issues, they likely won't cover repairs under warranty.

It's kind of a funny question. If you think a tune will damage your car, you shouldn't put it on, regardless of who pays for the repair. If you are confident that the tune will not damage your car, then there is no issue with the warranty. The only way that the tune impacts the warranty is if there is damage the dealer can show is caused by the tune. If there is no such damage, there is nothing the dealer can do (other than make noise).
There is always the possibility of something that is not related to the tune but the dealer will claim is related. I guess that is what you avoid by not installing the tune.

Nice! Start a build thread once you start. I'd be interested in seeing pics of what you do. I've always liked the looks of the X1

The dealer wont be able to detect the JB4 if you remove it before going to the dealership. If you have more questions pm me

If you put the JB4 on map 0, they can't detect it unless they take your ECU compartment apart and go looking for it.
Although one time I took my car in on tune 0 and got it back on tune 2... I think a lot of techs are catching on to what's out there. On all my service intervals, I just left everything on it. The one thing I had to get replaced under warranty... a headlight... I left everything on too |
