Just checked one of my motorbike helmets it has the AS1698 sticker, looking at the andra regs it states the following:

NOTE: From August 2013 only AS/NZS1698:2006 helmets will be acceptable.
AS1698 and BS6658 will not be allowed in competition after this date
regardless of date of manufacture.

http://www.andra.com.au/images/stori...%20guide_b.pdf

So guys whats the go with this?? Will they still let you run with the AS1698 helmets or have they clamped down on this?

The 2006 designates the manufacture year of your helmet. If it was built 2006 or later you're all good...I think...

Hmm what sticker does yours have on it? Do they check the helmets during scrutineering?

Yeah they do check them. Pretty sure mine doesn't have the :2006 after it but I only bought mine a year or so ago.

Mine has the sticker in the photo below. They checked it and didn't say anything.

Thanks for that Moe, that's what mine has also. Did they peel the inner lining back to look for a snell rating?

have you been to the drags this month (the new helmet regs was supposed to commence August 2013)?

Well it seems even new helmets out there are AS1698, so date of manufacture isnt relevant going on the comments in the andra regs:

AS1698 and BS6658 will not be allowed in competition after this date
regardless of date of manufacture

I may be dramatising, but i don't want to rive 2 hours then realise i cant run just because my helmet doesn't have the correct as sticker...

Last time I was there was on 3/07/13. Someone might need to volunteer giving them a call to clarify and let us all know!

I just called them, and was left somewhat confused.

I asked her I just wish to clarify the helmet regs, she stated that if it has the sticker with the australia standard sticker with an as 1698 and 5 ticks i would be ok.

I said that's confusing as the regulations state that a AS1698 helmet from August 2013 is no longer valid (which is what mine is, and that has the AS sticker with the 5 ticks) it must be the AS1698:2006 helmet.

She then stated yes that's correct you cannot use the AS1698 helmet. I was like wtf you just stated if my helmet has a AS1698 sticker with 5 ticks i would be ok? She then proceeded and stated that if you peel back the lining and it has a snell rating of 2005 or later you will be ok

My gut feeling is that this requirement isn't all that clear just yet, and chances are they aren't turning away punters with an AS1698 helmet??

I'm pretty sure that what they mean is that your AS/NZS1698 helmet must be manufactured conforming to the standards set on 24/1/2006. There's no such thing as a sticker which reads AS/NZS1698:2006 as far as I've seen.

Normally a helmet is valid for up to 10 years after the production date. What they're saying is that they're now not accepting any helmets produced in 2003-2005 even though traditionally prior to this new rule they would have been accepted.

As1698 is 1992 reg

As/nzs1698 is 2006 reg.

I think as long as your helmet states as/nzs1698 and not just as1698 you will be ok.

This is correct, I once borrowed my friends old bike helmet which was as1698 and they told me it was too old. Then they still let me use it and said get a newer one for next time.

Well my helmet sticker is just AS1698, but when you lift the inner lining it has a manufacturers tag which states AS1698, then you turn it over and it has 2006 2007 2008 2009....

Hopefully that shall be sufficient!

Maybe if I get there first you can use my helmet to get through scrutineering. Just in case. Wouldn't want you to drive all that way to be turned away.

Hmm yeah I'm not liking my chances atm to get in...

Perhaps I should just sit this one out and go and buy a another new helmet (kinda sucks as I bought a new $700 schuberth helmet from Germany for my bike 12 months ago and its the bee's knees for protection, comfort, lightweight alas it has the ECE rating...)

Just depends on how lax they are, as nugget stated they let him in for a 'one off'

I might give them another call tomorrow to try and clarify it, as they said today it should have a snell rating and if the snell rating is more recent then 2005 i would be ok, alas no mention of a snell just as1698 2006 2007 2008 2009
