E90 rear-ended, question (pics)

OK, so my sister was driving her E90 when someone stopped suddenly in front of her. Thanks to BMW's fantastic brakes, she was able to come to a complete stop without hitting the car in front. However, the small SUV following her didn't have the same luck, and smashed into her. Pics: (sorry, my cam sucks)

The person that hit her was a co-worker of hers so all the insurance info has been taken care of. Now my question: When I took a close look at the back bumper, I noticed these black pellets in the bumper towards the bottom. There were a bunch of them (the last pic) like they were meant to be there. I was just wondering what purpose they served. Also, from the limited pics I took, can anyone give an estimate of about how much it'll cost to get it all squared away and back to new?

From what I can tell, a new rear bumper cover is needed, and the right rear needs a ton of work to get it all straight again. (the back right door has a hard time opening and closing). Anyway, take a look guys and gals and TIA for any help.

Sorry to hear

It looks like the car needs a LOT of work.
They ave to see what damage has been done to the chassis, but it looks like it could be a BIG bill

The "pellets" are probably something that has been crushed inside

oh god. probably rear beam, rear bumper, rear quater panel, and rear trunk
from what I can tell. hopefully its not pushed-in toward the front so badly,
that the doors are moved toward forward. Which will result in frame damage
but I don't think theres frame damage from what I saw in the pics..

man. that really sucks.

Welcome to the forum. First off, tell your sister that I feel her pain and misery. My car had 300 miles on it when I was rear ended while at a stop sign. My damage was primarily to the oposite quarter, but her damage looks very similar (although less severe).

My car is white which hides a lot, but I recently noticed a spot they missed where the rear quarter buckled (same as hers). I still have a small crease/dent at the bumper seam. Body shop will fix it but they say they'll need the car for a couple of days (which is 1 1/2 weeks in body shop time). I was also never perfectly happy with the finished job where the rear quarter meets the trunk lid (I can tell that it doen't quite line up right).

Her car is black, so they will really have to do good work! She should go to the best shop she can find, and don't except anything less than perfection! Keep us posted, and if you would like more information on my experiences, feel free to PM me.

I hope for Sister is OK. Dang! What's up with all the rear ended e90's? Also, is there front end damage as well? You say she stopped in time yet the pic shows minor damage.

I'm not sure what an estimate would be, maybe other posters on here with similar damage can be more helpful. That's sucks!

Thanks for all the quick replies. And thanks for the welcome! This site is great and I spend almost more time here than the G35 forums lol. LEDZEP, sorry to hear about your car. It truely sucks when things like this happen. She just got her car back. It was at the BMW dealer for over a month for some frame damage after she nicked a curb. One week out, and this... But no one was hurt and cars can be fixed.

Thanks, she's fine. Just bummed about her baby! She was able to stop in time. But the force from the rear hit pushed her forward into the car in front.

My bill for a really good whack in the back was 10k tax in, up here in Montreal. They fixed it like new, although the paint was a bit mottled, it's never factory perfect.

LEDZEP, I didn't know you had been smacked, my sympathies to you too. We had two major accidents last year, I'm hoping that fate has no more in store for us this coming year (and a new car too!).

The SUV should have noticed that she was stopping quickly because of the adaptive brake lights!

Good luck with the repairs.

Thanks Stew. Yep, it happened way back in June when my baby was brand new. Let's keep our fingers crossed!!

Also, on the orginal post - you said SUV? The hit looks pretty low, it must have been a small one.

It was a small SUV, of the Kia variety. Not sure which model. LOL, yeah the lady driving the SUV should have seen the adaptive brake lights at work! I was looking underneath the car and it seems that the bumper cover and all the plastics connecting to it took all the force. The actual bumper (the beam) is straight and no worse for the wear. However, I'm not a qualified mechanic so what do I know?

I'll keep everyone up to date on the repairs. Hopefully everything works out smoothly and quickly.

Nikki never jokes. The E90 does indeed have adaptive break lights. During a "panic stop" or otherwise heavy depression of the brake pedal, your brake lights will double in intensity. This is designed to let those behind you know you mean business (or really just to jar them from their daydream). Of course when the person behind you is not leaving enough distance for proper reaction time (as 99.9% of Americans don't), it's a moot point.

I just like saying "moot".

Sucks to hear about the car, I hope it gets fixed soon

But shouldn't you also want money in damages since this will show up in your history and reduce the value of the car?

Yeah, she does. But I guess the co-worker has a history of driving rather crazy. And my sister said she was stopped for a good amount of time before she was hit. So her co-worker simply wasn't paying attention.

You'd have better luck playing the lottery. Sorry to say that because I feel the same way, but it's true. Insurance companies have a very powerful lobby. Remember, legislators and judges don't work for us, we only pay taxes. They work for the special interest groups that make them rich under the table.
