More competition coming from VW/Audi group?

Just announced VW is bring Golf-R to the states. Now before someone says they are in two different leagues, M car versus VW-R, blasphemy, keep in mind Seglar's words that BMW is creating a M car for the young and this car will definitely be cross shopped. Wanting to hear you opinions on this.

I wouldn't necessarily say they are direct competition but certainly alternatives though is there any comparison?

Funny but I am considering the Golf R and Scirocco R as alternatives to the 1M because they have the same number of seats and are similar markets. Both the Golf and Scirocco look more up to date and wont be superseded by a new model in a years time.

But i have always wanted an M not an R or an RS so hopefully the 1M won't disappoint.

I would consider the rs3 more of a competition. Similarly priced and spec'ed. I wish they brought the rs3 over so I could test drive both and see which one is better.

I could see the comparisons, but in reality not really. I would think of it more vs the 135i.

The GTI VS 128i(200 hp vs 230hp)
Golf R vs 135i. (275+awd vs 306 hp)

edit: then, as many have stated

RS3 vs 1M

Funny however, that they have chosen to make the Golf R manual transmission in the US, similar to the 1M

Am also considering RS3 but it's looks/model is more outdated than 1er and dealer asked for £2k deposit which I wasn't able to justify!

No indeed but it outdrove the 300bhp Focus RS according to Autocar comparison and it looks great. Shame inside is based on older Golf.

Bollox!

Golf R's are very, very good. Had them on my short list (along with RS4, C2S, Focus RS and 370z) before deciding on the M3.

Have you seen them? Its ok if you want to spend £43 on a car that looks like it cost £15

Seen and test drove two of them - liked them a lot but at £40k a lightly used M3 was the obvious choice.

They will certainly be cross-shopped- I am. The R and the 1M are on my short list for my next daily driver, Cayman R is an outsider...

I think the R is a good package overall, more practical than the M but not as nice a drive. The R is more of a swiss-army-knife car; it does a little bit of everything. Of course I own an R32 so I'm biased, but I've also owned an E46 M3 and a bunch of other stuff, porsches mostly, and the new R still makes my short list.

Leaning towards the 1M assuming pricing is as expected.

I have a 3 door Golf R on order, with Recaros. The first thing to do when it arrives is a $1500 APR tune and bingo, 240kws (up from 188 in Australian tune).

I have also placed an order on a 1M. I would NOT shop these cars, the Golf R is a AU$60k car and the 1M is likely to be close to double that here. The 1M is more likely an RS3 competitor, also expected to be >AU$100k in Aus.

Pricing will be key here for me.

If 1M works out expensive > £40k then R and RS3 come into play more but initial hints are that 1M pricing will be pleasantly surprising.

The Golf-R and 1M are definitely not competitors.

Well if I heard correct and loaded 1M comes in at £45k then I could be out.
Will have to see how leasing companies take to it.
Hope for good residuals!

As I said, Golf R and Scirocco R at £35k will come into play.

There is always the RS3 @ £40k LOL.

What do you think the 3/4 year residuals will be? £21k, £19k respectively
