Ticking noise and model year

Ok, I have to ask.....I have been reading a lot about this ticking noise issue, and wonder if anyone can shed any light on what model year(S) it pertains to. Seems that all of the posts I am reading, it is affecting the 06-08's. Anyone experiencing this with the 09?

Is it now fixed with the new head?

SI B 11 09 07
Engine January 2009
Technical Service
This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI 11 09 07 dated April 2008.

designates changes to this revision

SUBJECT
Intermittent Hydraulic Valve Adjuster (HVA): "Ticking" or "Rattling" Noises

MODEL
All E82, E83, E85, E86, E88, E60, E61, E70, E90, E91, E92, and E93 with the N51, N52 or N52K engines

SITUATION
An occasional ticking or rattling noise from the HVA elements may occur during cold engine starts or frequent short-distance driving.

CAUSE
In these situations, the HVA elements may not yet have been supplied with sufficient amounts of air-free oil. This condition will not cause any damage to the engine, and usually remedies itself with a longer driving distance or operating times at full operating temperature.

CORRECTION
In the event of a customer complaint, please perform the following the HVA bleeding procedure.
The N54 is not mentioned at all in this bulletin. I'm not posting the bleed procedure, because it will cause the N54 to go into limp mode.

Mine does it... It's an 09' with only 1200 miles.

Yeah I would like to know what the bleed procedure is as well. It bothers me, but thats what happens when you have a slick 135.

i have a 125i (same as 128i) and had this happen a couple of times when it was really quite cold and i had been doing about a weeks worth of short trips. it pretty much disappeared straight away when i went on a longer drive, and now that the weather has warmed up a little it doesnt occur anymore...

Thanks for your post - but I'm confused as N54 engines seem to be included in the complaints. Do both TT and NA motors have this problem? (So far, no such noise on my 128i).

Engine running (hood up of course) at ~3k rpms for 10mins. Check E90/92 forum under ticking. The tick is engine specific not model specific.

First time I've heard it - cold and rainy this morning. Super short trip. Rattling noise from motor - slight.

Tom
my 128i has this issue but was easily fixed.... warmed up the car for a good 10min then drove for another 10min then got out on the road and took the engine to 5k or so once or twice and when I arrived at my destination the engine sounded smooth as silk again with no noise..... someone posted the bleed procedure in another forum I cant remember exactly which one but it was kinda odd... warm the vehicle for 15min then take the rpms up to 2k-3k for a couple minutes then they say to repeat that about 4 times

You're going to put the car into limp mode, if you do that on an N54.

my moms 08 x3 does. she took it in and they fixed it and its coming back now a few months later. oh well

never heard of this on an n54

i think it has to do with driving the car at to low of an rpm for too long... good excuse for me to floor it every once in awhile.
