e10 and hfpf

I was thinking back to what i did right before the HFPF and that was the first time I filled up with e10 after having premium in it..

What i've noticed is that whenever I fill up with e10 I find more symptoms of the HFPF dieing than if its normal or premium. EG. long cranks.

Does this thought have any basis? Or is this just coincidence?

Probably coincidence. It seems to be random, people have used all types of fuels. I have never used anything but 98RON and mine still went...

I'm assuming you drive a 135i, yes?

Never ever use E10 or any fuel with ethanol in our cars. E10 has an octane rating of 91 anyway so you should never touch the stuff. E85 is basically race fuel on pump with an octane rating of something like 106 but it's like poison for our cars. E85 is only designed for cars that specify it from factory unless your car has been custom tuned, bigger injectors etc etc.

You are lucky your dealer didn't deny warranty coverage for HPFP replacement as they can check how much ethanol is in your tank.

Stick to 95/98RON. I use Shell V-Power 98RON and it works well for me. If your car has been tuned I would recommend filling up with 100RON where you can which is available at some servos in Sydney. Unfortunately, we don't have it here in QLD because we're always a few years behind you guys.

I wouldn't put E10 into it anyway.

I did a bit of digging around last night re hpfp problems with other car manufacturer and I have posted in the main forum - but it looks like BMW is not the only company, Porsche 997 apparently is the common issue, so's the VW/Audi TDI and FSI engines. May be it is not to do with a complete failure of the fuel pump, but with the narrow specs for the engines where it cannot tolerate a small performance deviation of the fuel pump. The bosch site actually stated that FP can be stuffed with contamination of a particle as small as 10 micron. May be not the type of fuel but how clean the fuel is actually make a difference.

Ouch, you're not using E10 apart from emergencies are you?

Only put 98 in Christine, and every now and then get a tank of 100RON from the servo on Windsor Rd when i'm out that way.

I read somewhere that ethanol in the fuel can make the car harder to cold start.

Actually, ethanol has higher knock resistance than petrol, so E10 fuel has an octane rating of about 94. E85 is 'bio-fuel' with octane rating of about 106 (as you stated) and is usable by the new VEII Commodores who's engines have a separate set of injectors and plumbing that is resistant to the corrosive effects of ethanol.

The octane rating is not the issue with E10. If you looked at just octane rating, then E10 will always be preferable to regular 91 unleaded, which is not the case. Ethanol is bad for our European engines since our internals aren't designed to cope with that chemical in the long term, which can lead to damage. Sure the manual says you can fill up with E10, but that's probably only for when there's nothing available. In Europe, the minimum octane rating they have is 95 at their pumps and no ethanol in sight.
