K&N N55 Drop-in Filter
http://www.burgertuning.com/N55_BMW_air_filter.html
Are these things US only because of design? or because of regulations? Is there a drop in option for Aus-spec cars? |

I don't see why AU spec would use a different filter but im really not all that familiar with N55's. Is it to go with the JB3 Harley? If so than definitely get it.

Yeah. I've also got a pair of Riss Racing Scoops that I want to get re-finished before I put them in...

Do it by all means get it but before you do, please do a bit of research to make sure it suits your expectations. Here is a start:

Thanks. Had a quick scan... Will have a better read later.
My expectations are thus: I'm not expecting better power or better sound. If I get either of them then WooHoo I'm looking to do this purely to offset any extra stress placed on the engine by the JB and make sure that it's breathing as best as possible. That's why I'm not looking at a DCI or CAI... Don't want extra noise (wouldn't object but it's not a must)... want to avoid heat-soak... |

Just be careful with those things as the oil might stuff up the Air Flow sensor.

I thought they were a dry filter... Did some checking after you're comment:http://www.knfilters.com/search/prod...x?Prod=33-2458
Whadda ya know? Oiled... Would the AFE Dry Pro Filer be a better bet? http://www.jlevistreetwerks.com/1-Se...duct_info.html |

Stick with the stock OEM filter. I'm pretty sure car manufacturers do everything they can to ensure the engine is breathing as best as possible. People usually do the air filters just for the induction sound.

I gained approximately 7-8rwkw from my BMS DCI. I think that's a substantial gain. If running stock boost I wouldn't bother but if your pushing more boost you'll only benefit.

Ah sorry I was thinking about an N/A engine. I changed the filter in my M3 countless times and ended up going back to stock. But then again, different car so different results.

I used a K&N in my highly modified Jeep. You should have seen the amount of particulate in the cylinders when I had it torn down to put a stroker kit in. Absolutely insane amount of wear in the cylinders too. I'd never recommend a K&N to anyone - no probs when I switched back to the OEM paper filter. Sometimes stock is simply better IMO.
Having said that the Jeep saw heaps of offroad in very hash, dusty conditions which would not be an issue for you so it could be perfectly OK. A few guys also had fouled sensors but I suspected the cause was over-oiling of filter - they swore otherwise though. |
