Dust boots cracked
Anyone else experiencing damaged brake piston dust boots? This is a pic of my rear caliper. Both rears are cracked. Fronts still look fine. Which I find odd since my pad wear would indicate much more energy in the front as expected. I use PFC-08 front and back on the track and I go through pads at a ratio of about 2.5 sets of fronts to 1 set of rears. And I'm not super hard on brakes. Never experienced any fade, even on tracks known for eating pads/brakes.
What problems will I experience if I don't replace the dust boots? Is this a critical issue? Going to COTA next weekend. Want everything in tip top shape. |

Those dust boots will be okay for the track. If you replace them and want to keep them from melting again and give yourself some extra margin against boiling your brake fluid get some Ti brake pad insulators.

Looks like heat damage.
Titanium backing plates will help and so will more air flow to the brakes. |

Will be fine but you don't want to put new pads on and push the piston back in. As long as you keep pushing the piston out (under braking) then no chance of contamination. When you put new pads on you'll want to do a brake caliper job. It's really easy to do and new boots are cheap. Pull caliper, cap fluid line, pop piston, clean using a brush and brake fluid then reassemble with new boots.. Once all reassembled do a good fluid flush to get all the air out of the calipers.
