Good deal?
I just got back from a local dealer shopping a 135i Coupe. He offered ED price of 1K over invoice and all the options I wanted at the 2010 wholesale prices. Does this sound good? Thanks.

$1K over ED invoice or standard invoice? There is a sizable difference so make sure they specify. Not sure what "wholesale pricing" is but if you're paying $1K over invoice (ED invoice, not standard) then it's being based off the price of the car after all options. $1K over ED invoice is a good deal but $1K over regular invoice for an ED car is not good at all. Most people are paying $500-$800 over invoice for cars delivered to their dealers which saves you more than the 7% that ED saves you.

Right, that's still $1,000 over the ED invoice price. Regardless of whether he does it before or after adding options, $1,000 over is $1,000 over. He's probably phrasing it that way to have you think you got a better deal but it makes no difference.

I got $1K under invoice for a new 2009 135i conv with 780 miles.
http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=257189 Are you ordering a 2010 from the factory? (I assume so, if you are buying a 2009 off the lot, you should pay 2009 prices.) Are you financing with the dealer? (If so, they're getting extra money from that.) I'd say that 1% over invoice would be a good target. If you are ordering new, you can try several dealers, and see if any will sell at invoice. Good luck! |

i agreed to fair profit of 3%, which is about 1K over invoice...kinda steeper than i wanted but hey...i wanted to car too and based on the area it was not a bad deal! Other dealers in the area where much worse and refused to even call me back with my original offers of $500-$800 over invoice. I even offered to pay cash to see a response and no reply...hahaha. West coast snobs! It was an interesting buying experience...not the best one i have had until i finally was introduced to Mike Baggs in Portland.

These general conversations about what people paid mean very little because they almost never account for timing, market conditions, fees, trade ins, and other things that impact what a dealer will sell a car for. OP decide what you want, then ask the dealer to write up a sample buyer's order with all of the fee disclosures. If you're leasing, you need to know the locked terms they will be applying. $500 over invoice doesn't mean much if they're packing your deal with a $400 doc fee, $200 prep fee, and a $300 loan origination fee.
Get a buyer's order, then come back and you can get an opinion that might actually be worth something. If the dealer won't give you something that itemizes the total out-the-door cost of the car, you can expect that whatever they tell you won't be what you will actually be asked to pay when the car comes in. Good luck. |
