Accessing Shark Fin Antennas
Does anyone know a way to install an additional antenna (for wifi for a carputer) inside the shark fin antenna housing? I guess this would require a) removing and reinstalling the actual antenna and b) finding a way to feed wires into it from the interior. ANybody know?

The inside of the fin is completely filed with a sealed unit containing the tiny recievers for the OEM system.
I doubt there is space for anything else

Depends on your options, but can include 1) GPS antenna 2) Telephone Antenna 3) Sirius Radio Antenna ( USA Only ) 4) I believe the new Digital radio reciever is also housed inside Interestingly they say the ones with Sirius antenas are slightly bigger than the ones without

90% off the cars are prewired for all 4 and it doesnt matter what country you are in. I have a 325I, in canada, and am prewired for all 4. The wires lead to the trunk where the nav unit and sirius unit would normally be mounted. Where the spare tire well is in normal vehicles. The plugs for these are generic and would plug into a wifi antenna/gps antenna and most likely work I had an aftermarket gps unit and XM radio running off these a while ago. as long as your car is sirius prewired or nav prewired you will have these. find them in your car configuration.

That would interest me a lot if true - though there seems to be some arguement here as to whether all have or not. I'm particuarly interested in the GPS antenna - as I have a pda satnav system - connected to a bluetooth gps unit in the back - and that is hooked up to an external antenna which I sit next to the window - if I could plug my Globalsat GPS unit into the cars external antenna - I'd be very happy! BUT - I don't have Sirrus or SatNav option - only phone bluetooth connectivity option - so reckon I'm out of luck? Any advice or exactly where and what to look for in the boot area?? Thanks. |

Revoce the trunk covering piece by lifting and puliing it backwards out of the car. Look for a set of wires with about 6 inches of velcro wrapping on them. Unwrap the velcro and examine.

Hi What type of connector is required to tap into the GPS antenna connection in the boot/trunk?
Any suggestions as to where to purchase one? Thanks

None of them. C is the Bluetooth antenna, A and B are telephone antenna and telephone backup antenna.
The GPS antenna should be "under" the blue box, right of the backup antenna plug. In cars with nav the cable is not there.

Hi,
Does anyone know which wire/s is the following connections, from the wires lead to the trunk where the nav unit and sirius unit would normally be mounted (Where the spare tire well is in normal vehicles). 1) 12Volts (constant 12V) => wire color? 2) 12 volts (only with ignition on) => wire color? 3) Ground => wire color? 4) Reverse gear engage (if available) => wire color? Cheers |
