#4 in this diagram... Get some non-flammable (CRC) Brake Kleen and spray down that area. Then recheck it. I think its your OFHG. Who ever been changing your oil has been over torquing the filter cap. Dackel

I can tell you the common mistake here, and that is using a strap wrench to remove the cover. It's made of plastic, and the strap distorts the cover's shape or roundness.
Always use a purpose built cap wrench for the removal. It is made of aluminum, and you'll find it on Amazon for $15 or so. |

Spilled oil from service, aftermarket oil filter +oring ect ect ect...
Get some brake clean and clean that up and check after a few drive cycles. Typically oil filter housing gaskets leak from below, not the cap. What you see is residue..if it starts to leak again, get a cap oring from BMW/new oil filter. Never go aftermarket with the filters...for multiple reasons..nuff said. |

@DSSG
^^correct! Too many people over tighten the oil filter cap. I fully believe this is what causes the OFH to leak. Dack

aren't you just supposed to line up the vertical green lines on the cap and housing?

Noop. They put that green mark on at the factory tell IF the oil filter has been changed - later down the (service)road.
