Future competitor for 1 Series Coupe?

Toyota reveals the first images of its born-again Celica - the Subaru-based FT-86

It's been on the agenda for a while now, but we're finally seeing a new Tokyo Motor Show concept of this fabled Toyota-Subaru co-developed car.

Rear-wheel drive, four seat, 2-door coupe. Looks pretty good too. And potentially a 135i rival :

Quote:
a turbocharged 2.5-litre boxer four from the WRX or STi could eventually power a range-topping performance version, which could become a spiritual successor for the Celica GT-4

That thing is hot. If it performs it could indeed be legit competition. Although MB is sopposedly also developing a 1er Coupe competitor.

Doesn't the 370Z pretty much act as the current 1 series rival in this price bracket? I see this car as the same thing.

However, I don't really compare Japanese cars like to the 135i as the build quality are poles apart.

From what i've read so far, the car isn't going to be touched by TRD or STi...

So imo, it's never going to match up to the qualities of a BMW.

Nice, and no doubt efficient and reliable, but somehow lacking in character. Take away the badge and it could come from any car company in Japan or Korea.

Do the same for BMW, Benz, Alfa, Peugeot, Citroen, Volvo, Land Rover and you know who the car is made by. I know I'm a euro-snob.....

The 370Z only has two seats, not four. IMHO, that is the defining basis of the 1 Series Coupe, and is the main reason I went for it. The only other competitor in the same price range is the Mazda RX-8 (even though it "cheats" by having two extra mini-doors). Everything else in the class either has only two seats, four doors or is a hatchback.

Yeh you're right there. With a Toyota, you'd never see brake light covers falling off, or seatbelts damaging the leather seat bolsters, or high pressure fuel pumps packing it in.

Who says it'll revive the Celica name? I suspect Toyota might launch this as an entry level Lexus and will probably go with some alphanumerical designation similar to IS250, etc.

My first impression... It looks like skyline 350gt.
I totally agree rx8 is one of the rival to 1coupe especially 125i... Simiarly price, performance, even built quality is not far off from BMW. This Toyota/Subaru is more likely fall to rx8/125i group but not direct rival to 135i.

I just won't look at a Toyota, that's all.

Anything that rebadges itself, taps some leather onto the seats and calls it a "luxury car" (Lexus), is not my cup of tea.

It is indeed a decent looking car.... but my impression of most japanese cars are that only a few have the feel on the Euro brands.

Agreed about Toyota reliability, it beats just about anything out there. Looks alright but it doesn't have the prestige/bragging rights which so many people buy bmw's for (not saying any of us do it though!).

Be interesting when it comes out, but will it come to Aus?

celica, eh i dont know where that site got their info. But it's been pretty common knowledge that the FT-86 is the reincarnation of the AE-86 corolla. It will most likely be branded as scion when it comes state side, and probably start below 20k for the NA boxer 4. tons of info here. http://ft-86.com/

Agreed on the lack of bragging rights... It is nice to own a car that can last me 10+ years with not many problem but then again do I want a corolla or a 135i???...

Ill take the 1'er!
