comfort access test
Today I drove my daughter to the domestic terminal at Sydney Airport. It was busy so I got out to help her and asked my mate to drive the car around the airport while I helped her check in. He made 4 circuits of the domestic airport then collected me outside the terminal. I had the car key in my pocket the entire time! How far can the car go without a key? I am pleased it didn't stop in the middle of the road!

I believe it can drive until the car is turned off... once it is off obviously it wont start again. But it wont stop of its own accord just because the key isn't in it.

that's weird... in Top Gear, Clarkson moved Hammond's car (a Mustang i think) about 30 metres away from the carpark onto the road as a prank before the engine cut out... Hammond was sitting inside a coffee shop with the keys in his pocket, but the car (which was parked in the carpark at the time) was still able to start cos it wasn't far away enough. So, if it was a 1er, theoretically, a thief would be able to drive the far as the car will go with a full tank of petrol (well, not very far then :wink lol
Although the 1er probabaly won't start with CA unless you're actually in the car... right? |

From what I understand, our cars won't start if you're not within a pretty close distance of it, as opposed to hammond's challenger which thought hammond was close enuf, despite him sitting in the diner at the time.
However, if it's already running and the person with the CA fob jumps out of the car or is car jacked (equivalent of leaving a non-CA car with the keys in the ignition and engine running), the car will keep driving until you turn the engine off. In which case, let's hope they stall the car trying to get away quickly!

Each manufacturer's implementation of CA is different. Nissans will start if the key is in normal open/close doors range. That is a bad thing.
I am glad to hear that BMWs will not.

You will only get a warning light once the key is out of range whilst the car is still turned on...
But as everyone else has stated once you turn the car off thats it..LIGHTS OFF !!!!!!! |

Can you start the car when the key is outside the car.
In my Toyota Kluger and all the Lexus, you can't start the car unless the key is inside the car. Same the car won't lock if the key is inside, only locks when it is outside.

The key does need to be in the car to start it and I couldn't lock the car when the key was in the front right door pocket but I did manage to lock my car with the spare key in the glove box. I had the other key in my pocket.

I hope that was just a test. You don't leave your spare key in the glove box, do you?

My wife left it in the glove box with her purse. I won't be doing it again. I have considered leaving a spare battery in the glove box so I don't get caught with a key with a flat battery

(Edit: After re-read cargeek post again ) Then it is a pretty ok system.... I wonder why the insurance goes up when I tell them my car is going to have comfort access.
Literally, my Kluger will not start until the remote is inside the car. And more importantly will refuse to lock or open when the key is inside the car. I hope they have enough spare key for me so I won't lock myself out... hehe.
