Are you on a stock tune?
Oil temps will be higher when pushing the car hard for an extended time in high ambient temps. 130 C is not too hot for the synthetic oil in our cars.

In the 1M Supplemental Owners Manual, page 17 (this is the US spec english version) it states that at normal operating temperature the engine oil will be between 100 C and 150 C.

In normal driving, mine usually stays right near 100-110C, but definitely goes up when driving the car hard. The highest I have seen was about 125 C, but I have not been to the track yet.

Also, what is the oil you use? I found that 0W-40 oil (among the factory suggested grades) runs cooler than 5W-30 which most if not all 1Ms left the factory with. The 0W-40 grade oil also warms up to normal operating temperature a bit faster so overall I find it better suiting the 1M or any turbo car with high performance.

Of course, you better find a fully synthetic and BMW approved oil (LL1-LL4), like the Mobil 1 0W-40 or its Castrol equivalent etc. to have a peace of mind on your choice of oil.

I don't track (yet) but like previous poster CarJunkie max I got the oil temps of my car after extended aggressive, high speed (200 to 270 km/h top speeds) high rpm and frequent on/off throttle driving on roads, was around 125-130 C. At that type of slightly irrational driving I was feeling the brakes are getting boiled up first but not the oil/engine. Normally 110 C is the max I get in law-friendly driving.

You also didn't make clear if your car has a engine tune or not. You would better have an additional oil cooler in that case.

According to Castrol no problem with their synthetic engine oil if below 140 degrees (C).
I had a chat with Castrol a while ago.

Reaching 130 degrees when racing on local tracks. Tuned car.
An oil change per season.
Listening to both BMW (CarJunkie above) and Castrol I don't see the need for another or different oil cooler.

Since one can't really address the water cooling issue without a properly designed, high efficiency radiator with the N54, most vendors and tuners resort to solving the issue by selling or installing larger oil coolers.

We have tracked and raced a 335i with a custom radiator and a stock oil cooler without any oil temp issues. At the same events, ER and Berk Technology were running their 135i's with large oil cooler and still run into temperature issues.

Our data showed that the custom radiator is excellent at keeping the water temperature just a few degrees cooler, enough to keep the DME from going into water temp related limp mode. The big surprise is how fast the cooling system's temperature recovers to normal when the vehicle is not under full throttle. We only made a few of these radiators and one of them is still on a BMWCCA Club Racing 135i, which does both sprint and endurance races without it ever overheat.

To combat the overheating issue you can use more distilled water mix(we ran only 10% coolant) in your cooling system along with an additive from Motul or Redline. Use a high quality 0W30 or 40 motor oil. We used Total 0W30 back in the Time Attak days with oil analysis done after each event. Blackstone Labs continue to recommend drain intervals of 6000 miles, which is just amazing for a track/race car.

Should you guys ever decide to make them commercially available, let us know

But in the meantime... any thoughts on the effectiveness of these alternatives:

1) The upgraded 42mm radiator from PWR: http://www.pwr.com.au/portfolio/bmw-car-radiators

2) Adding (just) the supplemental radiator & hardware from BMW's PPK2 kit

Thanks.

Karl.

Stock, our oil coolers are run at a certain(higher) temperature point. The BMS thermostat mod allows the oil coolers to run 24/7 thus being proactive and not reactive to heating. I drive my car very hard, and for long sessions. I am FBO + Software. Adding a FMIC does help with the heat-soak but more so in recovery time, it does not eliminate it by any means!(I too was expecting some miracle temp drop just from a upgraded FMIC) I did not see a large decrease in temperature until I had the thermostat installed/ coupled with FMIC. My temps now NEVER go above 240*F at it's highest/ worst! Also, keep in mind it is 90-95* in FL right now. Stock after 1-2 hard pulls, the gauge would creep over 250*F, and that is while completely STOCK! The hottest my temps go now is 240*F and that's after as many pulls as you want! This picture was after a 20 mile highway run w/ two bikes @ < 110MPH-155MPH.

I am convinced at this point, unless you simply can not drive/ operate the mechanics properly, my car will not overheat. I used to hate the N54 due to it's guaranteed heat soak, but once you solve that problem. You will never be happier in another car, especially on these little, and oh-so precise chassis.

We tried, but at over $1000 each and not a drop-in fit, we decided to drop the project.

FBO St.2+ with ER oil cooler and BMW 5w40 oil - I had 125-130 oil temp during the track days. So usually it didn't reach the 130 level. And the oil cools much better with the ER oil cooler during the cooling lap.

^^thats not that bad considering Manhart Racing is getting 1,400 euros for their alu radiator.

Why can't we get some cheap alu radiators made in Japan like you see for older BMW models !?

Karl.
I bought a PPK2 for my car and installing all the parts myself.

Just an FYI. There is a CRAP load of parts in the kit. Could not believe how much is in there. Includes all new wiring and large relay blocks for the upgraded rad fan as well. For the amount of parts in there, I am sure it is cheaper to just buy the complete PPK2 at one of the discount online places and maybe just install the parts.

resurrecting a dead horse here...

daunting task but, has ANYONE (aside from Harold) even attempt the custom-cut-and-fit, upgraded 42mm PWR radiators?

it would be interesting to find out really how much work would be needed for this.

I thought the PWR 42mm radiator (p/n PWR5970) was a drop in without cutting?

E.g. http://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-14...xi-manual.aspx

Is there another model?

Thanks.

Karl.

There's finally a direct-fit aluminum radiator by Mishimoto available (for 6MT only)! It hasn't been out for more than a couple months, but has anyone tried it? From all the feedback on these forums, it appears improving water cooling is more effective than oil cooling for preventing limp mode on the track. I've been considering adding just the auxiliary radiator from the PPK2 but this could be the way to go. Or both!

I met a guy with a 1M, who installed this mini oil cooler in front of his radiator... He said it worked great.

I've also heard that some guys have gotten the 335d radiator fan to fit on a N54 car. Its not easy but it will go in with some cutting mod-ing. Also... TuningWerk sells a thicker alu radiator... but its not cheap.

Here is that slick mini oil cooler setup...
