Very interesting. I wonder if BMW regrets not making the 1 smaller with a four cylinder to start. Then they could have stuck the N54 turbo in it and had the lightweight M series that everyone seems to want. Either way it sounds like BMW may try to downsize and the current M3 and then a tuned current model 135 may not be outperformed for a long time, which is very cool to me.

still curious about what there going to call it. Maybe i'll look into a 1 series M variant when I finish paying my student loans.

edit: I will definently look into it. I love the 1 so much.

this decision was probably made during the fuel price crisis last year. they might regret it depending on the economic and energy climate by 2012

This is great news. The 1 series is here to stay! The styling is suppose to be even more edgy and daring. Its going to be interesting to follow this and the Z2. The Z2 comes first though.

having owned a few turbo I4's, I would really prefer something like the N54 as an option, I6's just sound and drive better

But have you owned/driven a twin-turbo 4cylinder? The jewel behind most BMW's is the motor IMHO. Secondly, its how they balance the performance of the entire car. They have steered clear of 4cylinders in the U.S. market for a reason. Its pretty damn hard to associate it with luxury. This new motor should be great as well. I mean the cars shouldnt be as heavy as the current 1 series anyway.

Pretty sure bmw designed the R56 mini's turbo 4, and the JCW version

they just dont deliver torque or sound like a turbo I6

Hmm..I find the R56 turbo to pull quite nicely. I'd swear it was faster than my s2k sometimes. The JCW's still suffer from nasty torque steer. I'm sure they couldve done more if they wanted. They were mainly gunning for efficiency. M/T clocked the JCW clubman at 5.7 to 60mph and still has an EPA highway of 34mpg. Thats great.

my r56 had terrible torque steer, if the road was uneven it would try to put me in the ditch, and it scared the hell out of my wife, she did not like driving it. Front wheel drive was the only reason I got rid of it

the I6's just make better torque in a better location, and they sound better, I'm not sure if there's a way around that.

There's only a couple bmw I6's I do not like listening too, the E36 M3 and the E46 M3, both just dont sound right, I'm not sure if they use 3 pairs firing order or what, but they dont have that smooth sound

bmw could take a lesson from porsche on tuning in engine sound

and for the love of god, bring back the mini's pop/burble

A V6 in a BMW would be an epic fail.

Thats my whole point! My Father bought an 08 to play with. I drove down to see him and had it for the weekend. HOLY CRAP man. I mean it could be fun if you got use to it. I was still impressed at how the turbo pulled. It did very nice on the highway too. Did you have DTC or an LSD? He didnt have either of them. I think the motor would be perfect on a relatively light RWD car(1series).

I'm not arguing that an I-6 would be better from a sports car enthusiast standpoint. It just wont be as efficient. Perhaps its those Individual Throttle Bodies that inhibit that signature smooth sounding BMW. //M cars are suppose to sound rough.

Mine had an LSD, the mini would be great with RWD, holy crap that would be fun

the E36 M3's had single throttle bodies, they did not sound as good as a regular M50 IMO, maybe it's the cam timing that make it sound different, I've always hated the E46 M3 sound, I had a dirt bike sound like them once, when a bearing went out and there were parts going everywhere
