2007 E90 328/335 vs. 2006 E90 325/330: wait for 2007MY?

Hey everyone,

I'm new here, and am seriously considering buying a new E90 (haven't decided if I want 325 or 330 yet..), and my question is if I should wait for the rumored 328/335 that could be here by this fall. I'm driving an older Nissan that I really am starting to hate (espcially now that I've done all my research on nicer cars!). I don't know if I could wait until Spring 2007, but maybe I could hold of until the fall.

Also, will I probably get a better deal today (~$1,000 over invoice or so including fees) vs. when the new 2007 models come, or will those still be priced competitively to a new car today? I know most of the E90 335 information isn't official, but I'm interested to hear some opinions on waiting vs. buying now. Immediate satisfaction (and lower cost?) vs. newer model (better resale?).

I would wait until September and drive the Nissan if I were you. Nothing has been confirmed for the E90 Sedan but I think it would be worth it to wait if you want to latest model out there. But I can honestly say that the current 325/330 has enough power for the roads

Yeah, the power is probably fine with any of the cars. I'm really curious as to what else will change with the new 2007 MY cars - I know it's all speculation at this point, but I can't help but wonder if they'll change something significant, like the tail or headlights or something. I like the current design, by the way, but the E92 tail and headlights are different so who knows... do the coupe and sedans typically have such different styling cues?

Man, I really hate my current car, though... I feel a small shame every time I lay eyes on it. It was one of those "my dad gave me a decent deal on his car that I never liked but I couldn't say no" kind of things. Now I can't stand the thing.

Does anyone think pricing will be much tougher with the new model cars? I've never bought a new car before, so I don't know how the pricing varies from introduction to later, but I'd guess that it is seasonal. Also, do second-year cars typically have similar resale values to the first-year cars?

The E92 was designed that way so it stands out from the E90. Don't expect the E90 to get a facelift with the E92 taillights or front anytime soon. I don't think they will change anything significant with the E90 except for the engine if they take that route.

This is not a bad idea at all if you would like to save a good amount of money. But buying a new car and choosing the options you want is a complete different experience

Hmm... yeah, I was thinking of maybe going used and sitting on that for a year or two. At least I would feel better about buying new so soon if I saved some money first. If only I had the patience...

In terms of pricing/value, do you think the MY07 cars will be that different, either in terms of original purchase or resale? I wonder how many '06 330 or 325 owners will trade in to get the new engine (if they are indeed upgraded).

Hmm, does anyone have a decent car sitting in a garage they wouldn't mind loaning to me for, oh, about 7 months?

Although, we still don't know U.S. MSRP for either the 335 Coupe or Sedan, this pricing sheet
indicates a $5500 difference in base price between the E92 335i & the E90 330i.

Something to think about.....

Wow... that's a large difference.

Although, if you look up the base price on a 330i coupe, it is $37,600 vs. the military price for E92 of $37,800. How much of a discount is military pricing, usually? Maybe the pricing won't be as bad as we think. I would love it if I could get an '07 coupe for like $1,000 over invoice, but I somehow doubt that would happen.

I just bought a used '06 325i at about a $6,000 discount over new. Used '06 3-series are already popping up. Maybe the engine rumor is already lowering the prices? Keep your eye out. IMO you can't go wrong buying a slightly used car.

I have an "older" ('99) Nissan too. :finger:

It's fine for now though. Still runs great, 135k miles, gets decent mileage, etc. Hopefully it'll hold on until 2007/2008 when I can decide on either a MY07 E60 5er, or whatever they have out for MY08. Dunno what they'll do with that either.

By the way, I could get a '05 330xi w/premium and cold package with 7,000 miles @ ~$34,900 - is this a good deal? I like the old style too, but I'd much rather have manual and sport and not pay extra for AWD and auto... But, that's almost a new car, albeit an old style E46. Buying a new car is daunting for me because of all the different decisions to make - too many choices!

Nice to see a kindred Nissan spirit. That's quite a jump, from a '99 Nissan to a BMW 5 series!

I can't believe you can wait until 2007/2008! In comparison, I must seem very impatient...

To answer your question I figure I saved $6,000 off the best deal I could get at the dealer. The car had 7500 miles.

The smart, money-wise strategy is to keep your Nissan for as long as possible. If in July you decide you want to pay 3-4k more for a 2007 with more power than a 2006, go for it, you will recoup some of the difference in resale in the end. But do not expect delivery until early Nov.

That is an excellent idea and worth waiting for. I couldn't agree more! I have seen some very new pre-owned going for very attractive prices and very low miles.

Mods and upgrades are nothing new for BMW.
In 1992, I bought an E36, 320. The model was later upgraded to a 323.
I still kept my 320 without problem.

In 1998 I bought an E46 323 (traded the 320) and leapfrogged over all of the E46 owners. I had the most up to date BMW 3 series. Later, the model was upgraded to 325. Again, I kept my 323 without problem.

Neither car suffered from a low trade in value. In fact I believe, I had a very good trade in for my E46.

Now I have the E90 325, again leapfrogging the E46. Sure it will be upgraded again and I will hang onto my 325 until I leapfrog again with the next 3 series in say 2011 - 2012.

Point is, you can wait and wait and wait. No BMW while you are waiting. I enjoy my 325 very much and will continue to do so, even when that enging is upgraded.

Certainly if the 2 door variant suits you, wait. But to keep on waiting till who know when in 2007 with a car you don't want any longer seems a waste.

No matter what car you get, BMW will be working on upgrading it.

All the best with whatever BMW you choose.

Yeah, I agree that BMW will always be upgrading their cars, and if you alwasy wait for the next best thing, well, you'll probably be waiting for awhile.

Still, the prospect of getting the new, more powerful engines is enticing, although I'm somewhat cautious on where the pricing will end up. I hope they stay competitive with their competition, but we'll have to wait and see.

If I could find a slightly used car for $6,000 below what I could negotiate with a dealer, I'd take it for sure. Personally, I haven't found too many deals yet here. By the way, did you get that from a private sale or from a dealership?

Don't wait. After getting the coupe, let's say at: $42k + $700 dest. charge + $2400 premium + $1600 spt +$1800 GPS + paddle shifters or maybe step $1275 = ~ $50k, you could then think about waiting for the new M3. The story never ends.

If you keep waiting for the next big thing, you'll never buy anything. I am in the same boat. I get back from overseas in mid-August. I just ordered a 2006 330i sedan. I thought about waiting a month or two after I get back to see if the when a 335i sedan will be released, but I really have been looking forward, for the past year, to picking up my car soon after getting back to the US. I'm sure in 5 years or so, when I am looking for a new BMW, they'll be something a lot better to trade up to, and I'll have a nice down payment from my trade-in/private sale. Like others have said, you could be enjoying a BMW right now.
