2011 135i - ticking sound behind tachometer

Hi,

Ran into an odd, and horrendously annoying noise that I can't get rid of. It almost sounds like the ticking sounds that old computers used to make when booting up, and it appears to be between the firewall and the back of the main instrument cluster. It does not begin to happen until the engine hits ~160 degrees, but is pretty much constant once the car is fully warm. The only thing I can think of is that something somehow got in the cabin air filter cutouts and back behind the firewall the last time I updated my JB4's firmware, but I can't see anything. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Did you ever figure this out? The only suggestion I would offer is that something like small twig or pine needles got past your cabin air filter and is interfering with your blower fan blades. This happened to me on a Mazda years ago, and I hate to tell you...I never got it out. I listened to that sound every time I used the heat, air or A/C. Some people say that is what drove me crazy, but I think there are some other reasons too.

Peace

Wow that's a weird one lol. Were you ever able to find the cause?

Some thoughts:
Thing stuck in a fan
Cluster servo wigging out
Elves.

Uhhh so does that happen when you turn off your blower fan (shut off climate control)?

Didn't realize someone finally responded to this thread!

Definitely thought it might be something that got past the cabin filter, but couldn't see too well inside the last time I had the thing off. Pretty confident that's what it is. Also found a fair bit of crap inside my intake when I took my JB4 off last week. Seems like it's better, but probably fair to assume it's something past the cabin air filter.

...and elves/gremlins!

If you have Nav, it could be the hard drive in the dash. My wife's E90 CIC has a hard drive clicking sound when it boots up. It's not super noticeable, but if you are listening for it it's easy to pick out.
