Dackel on the both 135i N55 DCT i have owned and also on a 135i N54 AT i reached 280km/h on speedo, so what's real life V Max for that (approx) also i have a friend who achieved same speed on a 135i N54 MT. I currently own a 1M but have never tried to push it to V Max as it is just going out of break in period, so the question is do the 1M reach 280km/h in speedo also?

The speedo's read +5% or so. This is bc of a German law.

A 1M will show 270ish on the speedo. Maybe 275 kph.

A 135i is limited to 250 kph. I know the German spec cars speedo reads to 280 kph, in stead of only 260 kph (160 mph) like the US spec cars have

On my US spec 135i(stock), the speedo would show 155 mph (250 kph) but the car only only traveling at 240 kph according to my gps. Now with my flash tune, my car can max out the speedo needle, and the fastest my gps has shown (or that I dare look over and read(!) while driving those speeds - is 283 kph. I am sure given more open road my car would go another 10 kph more. The German 1er forum guys say a tuned 135i will do 295ish. I think a 1M would do the same.

Here is a pic of my 135i stock at its limiter...

PS: It is important not to exceed 170 kph for the first 2,400 kms on a new BMW. This is not because of the engine but for the drive train, your diff can develop a gear whine under light load IF you do not ad hear to the break in procedure. I've had many German rental cars that you can hear that gear noise bc the renters never followed the breakin.

I was talking to a fellow 135i driver at an autocross and he swears he did 168 mph in it stock. I know aerodynamics stink on 1m but could 135 have higher ungoverned top speed?

Noop. Maybe his speedo said 168 mph but I doubt it. Most of them only read plus 5%. Car was only going a max of 250 kph. Probably more likely 240 kph like mine when you look at a gps corrected speed.

I ran into a guy with a M3 here... he swore his car would go 186 mph. I said no way! Not stock. I explained to him how ALL bmw's (non-M cars)are limited to 210 kph. IF they have the M-sport option ( it comes with option #840 speed limiter increase) which limits the car then to 250 kph.

I told him how all M cars are limited to 250kph (ish) (265 max) but you can pay to go thru a M driving school ($$$$) and once thru one, you take your car to a BMW Zentrum and you can pay (a grand or so more) to have them increase the speed limiter to 280 kph. BMW will do this for all M cars - except the 1M, and X5M and X6M cars. These cars are limited to 270 kph.

He told me BS and how he was gonna video the car doing his quoted speed the very next week. Well... no video. But to his credit he did admit that his car would only do 160 mph. He also lives in Germany.

PS: BMW M-sport option code 840 increased top speed limiter (speed synchronization)…

i am not really into high speed autobahn driving so i only tried it once so far...

when i drove to munich for welt3.0 i was having a little fun with a swiss e46M3

the speedo definitely showed 280kmh - rpm between 6000 and 6500 then i thought the car felt somehow unstable and i slowed down - i am sure the needle would even travel a little beyond 280

dont know how the speedo translates to real kmh but it will show over 280 - at least mine did

Well here in chile you can order the 135 with the speed limit to 280km/h , i know that for sure. And in the three 135's im telling you they were ordered with that option, in fact normal BMW come limited to 250km/h here in Chile

So what is that option number for the 280 kph speed limit? Or do you mean the speedometer goes to 280 kph?

As far as I understand it (and confirmed by two bmw dealers over here) all AG cars are limited to 210 kph unless they have the M-sport package which includes option #840 (speed syncronation). Then the car is limited to 250 kph. But the speedo always lies (ie reads faster than true vehicle road speed!). When it reads 250 kph or more(say 280 kph) you are NOT traveling that fast. Your gps will show you how fast you really are driving.

Most people just do not have an autobahn at their doorstep to play around at these speeds with. And most people do not feel comfortable enough at those speeds to look over at their GPS or look at thier hood that is lifting up!

Our cars get very squirrely at any speeds over 190 kph. And after 240 kph (and up!) the car really starts to move around.

+5%, is that why I keep thinking everyone around me is going so fast.... old ladies in Honda Civics going very fast around me? Now when I accelerate I will have to do some math so I can approximate the speed limit.

Ok, I'm kind of joking here.

It seems like more than +5% on my car, does this vary at all. I haven't hooked my GPS up to the car to check for sure, but I have compared my speed on those signs that flash and it seemed like more than 5%. Does anyone have any more real life experience with this?

Like at 55mph the GPS speed is blank... etc.

I use a gps every now and then (a garmin) in my 135 and on the highway my car may say 85 but the gps says 79/80ish around there so i'm guessing they are all off a little bit but not a huge amount.

? Anyone know about how far off it is at about 45 mph, it seems like it's also about 4-5 mph in that speed range also.

At lower speeds (under 90 mph) the error is only like 3% or 4%. At high speeds 160mph plus... it is around 5% or so.

Here is a picture of my 135i speedo at night. I have had the M3 digital speedo coded for my car. When you have it coded you can use the "buffered" value that the speedo uses(reports) or you can choose to have it read ACTUAL vehicle speed. Mine reads actual vehicle speed. It is dead accurate with my GPS.

You can see while the car is really traveling at 130 kph (80 mph), the car's speedo reads slightly higher speed.

I have heard a "tuned 135i" can see 295ish kph. The fastest I have seen on my 135i is 283 kph. A "tuned 335i can do 300ish kph. One guy I know has seen 312 kph.

Over here in Germany, there are companies that will unlock the V-max (speed limiter) but your gonna pay upwards of 1K euros for just the unlocked V-max. And its not that much more for "chip tuning" so most people just go that route. I think it will be darn hard to find a 1M owner over here who only has his V-max unlocked. Most will just pony up the extra money for a flash tune.
When I traveled to Germany on 1M, with two passengers and two suitcases top speed was 275, with one passenger was 290-295 it was downhill and 102 German aral petrol, and my GPS gone mad!!

Question, if German law requires the speedo be 5% inflated, does that mean our odometer is also reporting with that 5% inflation? Maybe I'm crazy, but if you're doing 100 km and reporting 105 km, is it calculating speed+time based on the 105 or 100?

On my car I have the M3 digital speedo set to report ACTUAL vehicle speed, vs the +5% the speedo reports.

My M3 digital speedo (v = kph) agree's exactly with my GPS navi.

That's strange because V-max should not change with a loaded car vs an empty car. Unless the aerodynamics are really changed (ie the trunk dragging on the ground and the front up in the air).

When you say "V = 105" you mean your car's speedo - right?

Do you have original tire sizes and wheels?

I also have an accurate digital speedometer. I did the coding myself. Both changes are in the "Kombi" module of the software. To enable the digitial speedometer, you set "BC_Digital_V" to "aktiv". To turn off the digital correction that makes it read faster than you are going, set "BC_Digital_V_korrektur" to "aktiv". The last is counter-intuitive but I am pretty sure that is what I did. My digital speedometer is never more than 1mph different from my GPS. Usually they are the same.

Anybody with the cable and the software can easily make these changes.

the stock speedo wont go past 160..I've hit 160 in 5th shifted into 6th and kept going to what I would estimate 170-175mph, and yes I know the speedo is off alot at those speeds. Once in 6th I was on it for another 10 seconds, I was hauling.

Yea... but on a 1M or M3... that digital speedo uses the "buffered" value which is +5% just like the signal the speedo diaL reads.

On my car I have it coded so that my digital speedo (V= kph) reads ACTUAL vehicle speed while the speedo dial reports the +5% speed signal.

IF I wanted to you can recode the speedo dial(or digital M3 speedo, "V = kph") to read either "actual" or "buffered" values.

THAT is why your "V = 105" while your GPS says you really traveling at 100.

Yup, that is correct. On us cars, once your V-max has been removed, the speedo will not go past 160 mph. On a euro car the speedo needle won't go past 280 kph.

Here is a crappy video I made of driving my 135i back in September. I was on the A9 autobahn coming back from Munich to Nurnberg. I got up "only" to 274 kph. Its a little shaky but you can see when my speedo dial stops at 160 mph (260 kph) my M3 digital speedo still climbs. I let off at 274 kph bc that was fast enough while filming. I have seen 283 kph before.

It could be possible that for some markets BMW does not install the electronic V-max on the car. That would be my bet.

I know German and US models have a V-max limiter.
