I don't have much experience breaking in the engine, but my suggestion would be to drive how you would normally drive. A few fast pulls off, a little hard breaking and then some normal driving. Don't dump the clutch, or 'test the rev limiter'. Just treat your car with respect for the first 2000km's and it'll all be fine.

Does anyone know what you are not supposed to rev a 320diesel over in break-in period (considering it's max power is at 4000rpm (or very near to that))

I have a 320D E90 and my manual says 3500 max revs for the 320D during break in. It readlines around 4500.

Well peak torque is at 2000 rpm so i don't think that'll be too hard to keep to :P Besides, that car dies a little after 4000!
