Any way to tell if it's an LSD?
This question must have be asked many times. Yet here it is again
The Fedex guy just dropped of a 2008 135i stock differential that I bought on ebay. Complete pumpkin. bought it for a future LSD. Really well packed in double cardboard boxes. it weighs about 82 pounds in the boxes. When I was inspecting it I turned the axle shaft on one side and the other side turned in the same direction. Does this tell me anything or does the input shaft need to be locked from turning to do this test? I'm pretty sure it's a stock open differential but my quick test got me here to write this question. Thanks |

When you turn one wheel(or driveshaft) IF you have an LSD the other side will turn in the SAME direction.
IF it turned the opposite direction, that is a open diff with no LSD.

A factory open diff box should spin opposite, but you do need to keep the input shaft from rotating before confirming the two output shafts rotate in opposite directions.
Not all LSDs work when one side has zero load. I.e. if one wheel lifts off the ground or you are testing like you are there "bench testing" so to speak. If you got an LSD, score one for you! Seems odd someone would make that mistake, though. That's like a $2000+ mistake if it is a 3.08 from a manual transmission model.
