Preparing for a flat with non-RFT?
What do most people do to prepare for a flat when using non-RFT's, because it's going to happen eventually.

I've got a bottle of 'slime' sealant, a portable air compressor and a tire plug kit in the trunk. Figure I'll try for the plug first and use the sealant as a last resort. Now I think about it, it's probably a good plan to have some pliers too in case you have to pull out a screw or something.

I live in a city and have AAA. I've had a car with non RFT's and no spare for 12 years now and used roadside once. I used to carry a plug kit, but haven't bothered recently and just tell my wife to call BMW Roadside for the 1er if she gets a flat.
To be fair, my M Coupe has a compressor, which I should probably add to the 1er, but I will not use slime as it's more of a pain when it comes to removing it from the wheel. If you need sealant, it's better to just have the car towed. |

Stupid question, but will BMW Assistance two your car if not using runflats? I imagine you would have them take it to a local garage than a dealership to have the tire replaced, correct?

BMW Roadside will only tow you to the dealer. However, they're also just AAA, so if you want to pay for it or have AAA, they'll take you wherever you want to go. And no, the AAA tow truck driver doesn't care if you have RFT's or not.

The very act of placing the 12 v. compressor & plug kit in my trunk has warded off all but one non RFT puncture. And since that leak (in a DWS tire) only resulted in about 3 lbs. per week air loss, I drove on it for 4,000 miles before finding the nail and having it repaired.
BTW, I also carry a compressor in the BMW which still has RFTs on the principle that it is better to drive to a repair facility on an inflated RFT than a flat one. Tom |

Do you have the part number for that Spare wheel and tire? I want to see if it would work for the 1M.

Less than 30 bucks and you're good to go, as long as you have a hole and not a gash

I dug up my old parts invoice. Here are the BMW part numbers: jack = 71106773536 - 100 euros spare = 36110445045 - 120 euros The spare came with the tire mounted on it. It's for a 335i German specs. From what I gather you can not order this wheel/tire in the USA. The tire doesn't have DOT rating. You could ask a dealer though what they say. ? Also for the e60 5er there is a steel wheel spare tire kit - also a 17 inch wheel. But its slightly wider wheel (taller when sitting in the trunk) Quote:

Proabably any 3 series spare will work on a 1M.

In my last car I had a can of fix-a-flat, as I had fiberglassed a sub enclosure into the spare tire well so of course it was never actually w/ the car. In 10 years of owning that car I never once had a flat tire. Prior to that (10+ more years further back) I only ever had one flat tire that I can remember, and I caught it right away (didn't take driving more than a few seconds to know something was wrong).
I guess that's made me complacent since I don't have anything at all in the current car, and with the abundance of towing companies available, cell phones, friends that could give me a ride, etc. I probably won't bother. It does remind me that w/ the last car I had 2 sets of wheels & tires (summer / winter) and had "extra" I could use at any time. That's no longer the case... Having a spare in the garage at least would be a good idea. Hmm. |

I carry the BMW Mobility kit, a small jack kit, and a hole plug kit. That said, I would prefer the small spare Dackel uses.

So if you have a small puncture in your non-RFT tyre and you call BMW Roadside Assist and they tow it to the nearest BMW dealer, will they repair the puncture?

I use the ///M mobility kit: http://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-18...essor-kit.aspx
I love having a compressor for the car, haven't had a bad enough flat to need to use the sealant, the pump has come in handy for leaky tires until I get to the shop

The only thing I carry is the M Mobility kit in my trunk, even though I have the small BMW donut spare at home in the garage. If I went on a trip with my car, I might carry the spare and jack kit.
Regarding road side assistance, AAA Plus in the US will tow you up to 100 miles to the location of your choice. I'd rather have them flat bed my car to my driveway than the nearest garage or BMW dealer. That said, I've had one flat in the last 10 years and it was a slow leak that happened in my garage. |

Anyone in the U.S. have anything similar to this setup? If so, where did you order the spare? I went with non-run flat tires and got a flat with a huge hole that was not sealable with the Slime sealant (small copper pipe on freeway) . I ended up calling BMW Assist to tow my 1er to nearest dealership, then got my wallet raped to replace the tire.
I wouldn't mind sacrificing trunk space to hold a spare. |
