DIY changing your BMW wiper blades…

I thought I would put together this little DIY on how to change one's wiper blades. For most of us - the wiper blades are covered under BMW NA’s free maintenance program. But for those of us who bought our cars thru Military Sales or who live outside the USA… we have to pay for services and wear items like wiper blades.

So… here is my little DIY. Maybe this will help someone in the future. IF you follow the pictorial directions on the wiper blade box… you really can not go wrong.

The BMW wiper blades (set, two blades) cost me 28 euros (w/o 19% sales tax and with a “good guy’ discount) at my local BMW dealer/Zentrum.

BMW part number: 61610420549 wisch blatt (wiper blades) 500mm (20 inches) long

The new blades come clipped together so as not to incur damage in transit.

BMW’s directions on the box…

NOTE: do not let the wiper arm slap/spring onto the windshield! Or you WILL break your windshield as many a forum member has found out the hard way.

Removal:

Installation:

Pull wiper arm up – be sure NOT to et it fall back onto the glass windshield!!!

Press the side tabs in, then lift or tilt the wiper arm – it pivots at the top of the wiper arm.

Pull or pivot the wiper blade out – the blade pivots at the tip – where it attaches at the arm. See next photo.

See how it pivots…

Now side the wiper blade up, off the tongue of the wiper arm…

That’s it! The wiper blade is free…

Here are some picture of the passenger side being done. I took these without my hands in the photos(way!).

Wiper arm off the windshield…

Side tabs unclipped, and released…

Another look at the tabs unclipped…

Swing the blade out and up - now the blade can pivot outwards…

Now put a new blade on and install it on the wiper arm.

Make sure you hear that tell-tell “CLICK” to make sure the new wiper blade is fully secure on the wiper arm! You are now done.

Hope this helps someone out.

It would be wise to cover the windshield with a really thick towel or blanket just in case the wiper arm were to accidentally slip during a blade change and whack the windshield...

Can we fit longer than 20 inches. I notice a fair bit of gap between the driver and passenger wiper blades.

I don't see why not. As long as the wiper blades clear the top of the windshield.

But if you do that... the wipers will tend to skip/bounce as they wipe. Also at higher speeds they might not wipe the windshield clean. In other words they might lift a little bit.

I installed a set of Rain X Latitude-20" wiper blades over the weekend. They come with the correct connector adapter and took only seconds to install. They lock at the top instead of the bottom. I placed a small pizza box on the windshield to make sure the wiper arm wouldn't swack the window while installing by accident.

They are only $32 a pair at Walmart. They work perfectly, and don't chatter like the old ones did. Let's see how long they last!

Got the Rain X on my pickup. Best I've owned and seem ozone proof.

A bit late to the party but I was wondering if anyone here could help me with my wiper problem...
I just brought the exact same wipers (OEM BMW Part No 61610420549) for my 135i E82 Mid 2010 N54 Coupe and the spoiler on the top of the wiper is facing the wrong way. The rubber scoup on top of the wiper is facing up the windscreen not down like the original wipers on the car. (I presume they face down to add downward pressure to stabilise the wipers at high speed) I'm not sure what's going on, the BMW packaging says its the right part but its back-to front? I can't seem to easily remove the ends of the wipers and reverse the spoiler either. Have I got the wrong part and I missing something obvious?

The wipers can only go on one way. I think your just looking at the spoiler the wrong way. I'll take a picture of my wipers tonight.

My car is out of warranty and this DIY was a help. If you search the internet you can get a discount on the replacement blades. I think I paid $66 for "2 sets" of OEM replacements.

But, be careful when washing / drying your windshield. I was drying my car and my drying towel caught then end of a wiper blade. It popped off and the arm slammed down on the windshield. CRACK!... that was a bad day. Needed a new windshield.

Anyway, this DIY is perfect. Just follow and save some money.

I hate replacing entire wiper assemblies. If much rather swap in PIAA silicone squeegees into the OE wipers. Can this be done??
