Ya you're right about the f30 my bad but if dct only comes in Is cars how does the plain 135i have it if you don't get 6mt. I know that for a fact. When I was ordering my135i the only options were 6mt and dct. The 135 had steptronic up til 2010 but for 2011 and above it was dct or 6 speed only
My bad in this one. Even me have DCT for my 135i not 135is. Sorry for my mistake right after correcting your statement. Well, all in all DCT works differently than the traditional auto or torque converter that purely auto not manual that shifts by the computer.

That's US only they might be available somewhere else just like in the 335i in Europe so you might have read it.

BTW I am not suggesting one over the other they both have good points & no so good points. Have both & the DCT is quicker but the 6MT can still be a lot of fun to drive.

I wasn't saying one was better than the other either. Just makin sure I had my info rite on what had dct and what didnt. I think I may have assumed the f30 had it just because it has the silver shifter with the park button and not the more traditional auto shift lever that you move straight back like in the e90 but I know the dct is deferent than a regular slush box. As for me ill always take my 3 pedals over a dual clutch paddle shift tranny. I'm sure it's a blast at the track but would bore me everyday. And 6mt are a dying breed mostly only the purist appreciate. Harder and harder to find just sitting on a lot. Almost always have to order that's why I did.

I have been pondering the idea of a 135is before the production ends at the end of the year and this is the only option i cannot decide on. In terms of which transmission will work/last longer what is your opinion? I want to get the car as my DD for now then a few years down the road turn it into a track only car.
-Will a DCT transmission last as long as a manual, reliability wise?
-Are there any major issues/servicings to the transmission?
-If i plan to keep the car for a long time span (10+yrs) what would you recommend?

I'm not sure if these are dumb questions, just wondering.

No, they are good questions. Unfortunately, the long term reliability of of the DCT is unknown at this point with it being relatively new. What can be said for sure is that it is a more complex transmission compared to a traditonal manual. There have been some cases with the DCT in the M3 that have included lag, only selecting either odd or even gears, or even refusing to shift gears entirely. I beleive all of those cases were handled under warranty, so it's hard to say how much it could cost out of warranty until we hear from any owners who experience these issues once out of warranty.

I'd be surprised if anyone who claims to love manuals would end up satisfied by a DCT.

The DCT shift speed is terrific and the car is fun to drive, but on a car like this I don't think there's any way a DCT can compare to a manual when it's just a question of spirited driving. I have a DCT and don't regret it, but it's mostly a practicality thing of not having to drive a stick in city traffic all the time.

It seems like the op loves the manual so they should probably go with another 6MT.
Like the poster above I went with the DCT and I don't regret it. It's a very good auto transmission. I had manuals for most of my life and I enjoy the ease of an auto now for a daily driver.

F1 uses SMG if I'm not mistaken. Pretty sure that dual clutch would violate current FIA rules.

Although there's no question that the dual clutch in the civilian world is a derivation of F1 style shifting.
