Issues with 225/45/18 and 265/35/18 together?
I currently have stock 264s (18 ") with 225/40 and 265/35 Super Sports. I've gone through 4-5 bubbled tires so I'm thinking of upping the fronts to a 225/45 for the extra sidewall and perhaps switching off the PSS to something else (Goodyear F1s, Conti DWs, Michelin A/S 3+). Any issues with this?
It seems like PSSs are not known for bubbles so maybe it's just my bad luck. Michelin did say to take them to an authorized dealer for inspection to see if they can help out, but the process is becoming a hassle, living in Manhattan makes it difficult, and they're offering no guarantees about reimbursement, so I'm open to suggestions on how to handle this. Your problem is potholes: stop hitting them.
Really. Not kidding. I live in north Jersey so I’m familiar with the road conditions. Knock on wood, but I haven’t had a problem with my 135 on 18” wheels. However, I had an 08 335xi, brand new at the time, and that car ate up 4 tires and 1 wheel in a 2 year span. You can easily bubble the short sidewalls because there is little material to absorb the impacts yet not bend a rim. That was my first car with 18” wheels but it also had factory run flats. Once I switched to non-runflats and drove like I was avoiding land mines, the problem went away. |

PSS have very thin sidewalls.
Bubbles occur due to internal tears, resulting from impacts - mainly due to potholes due to the speed of impacr and also the shape of a pothole. Imagine when you accidentally reverse into a kerb, but much faster and sharper angles. Goodyears are even more fragile. What pressures are you running? |
