Wow, only 30,000 miles on front brakes!
I work at a car auction. Recently drove a 2015 228 automatic with approx 30K miles. Red warning light for brakes was on. Looking at the pads thru the wheel, it surely did look like pads were down to 5 or 6mm (approx 3/16ths or 4/16ths). Interestingly enough, the rotors had no "lip" whatsoever. This car was most likely a lease return since the "owner" was BMW Financial.
My son drives a 2009 Honda Fit and he usually drives very conservatively. He has 100,000 miles on original brakes. He was trying to beat my record of 75K miles on front brakes of my Honda Accord ( I drive more more "sportingly".) My brakes on my 128 were changed at 42,000 miles but I'm sure they were still at about 7mm. Garage gives "free" technical inspections for BMW HPDE's and I was going to a track day. Can't really argue with garage-its take it or leave it. |

5 or 6 mm is a lot of pad material still. Probably just a bad sensor.
I am at 62k on my car, and that includes several track days. Still lots of pad left. |

Not brake flush, I know that symbol. Looking thru my owners manual, the symbol of circle with exclamation mark in centre and short circular lines left and right indicate low brake fluid level. Now I cannot remember what the written message was on screen (from i Drive?). If the car did not sell, it should be back next week-I'll have another look at symbol plus I'll visually check brake fluid level.

Usually the discs wear with the pads. Perhaps the parts have been replaced but they didn't reset the fault memory if the car presented with the red brake light on, prior to replacement.

Pads and discs on my 125i were never changed since 2012 and 48,000 kms on them.
The rear pads are down to 5mm or so, BC indicated another 1,600 kms left before replacement, fronts are still very thick indeed and BC shows 24,000 kms left on them. Discs all round have a small lip on the edges and are a little bit warped but nothing serious and no vibrations even when heavy braking. I suspect the rears are eaten up due to the jelly rear subframe always moving and the TC always kicking in, on dry sunny days and over some bumps and pot holes the TC kicks in a lot. Car is 100% street driven though. |
