Landcruisers are stock items for bushies and the 200 starts at $71k. Even the cab chassis 70 starts at $55k and doesn't take much to go beyond the luxury threshold.

As for the tour operators, I imagine they'd be interested in the Tarago which starts at $50k and runs up to $73k for the luxury spec. Can't see many of them opting for the top of the line though.

But no tax exemption for large families needing taragos. We all know they are living it up on their baby bonuses!

Lots of wealthy, German-prestige-car-driving farmers around (I actually met one today!)....yet they have concession cards that entitle them to the same benefits as pensioners and people on the dole.

The most important people in this country are Sportsmen and Farmers.

It would seem that everyone else doesnt do anything for the country.

This was posterd on the ABC today.

The Taxation Institute of Australia says new research revealing four out of 10 families are not paying tax shows the need for reforming the system.
Figures from the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research published today in News Limited papers show 42 per cent of families are paying no net tax.
This is due to the increase in Government benefits in recent years that offset the income tax paid.

No wonder Rudd is trying to suck more tax from us. 1/2 the population is living off our tax!

Have to look at those figures with a pinch of salt I think. 42% of families must be receiving tens of thousands of benefits each year. That's a lot of moola. Not sure how this can be so?

Opposition today proposed LCT be applied at the increased rate of 33% to cars over $90k. Current rate to stay for cars $57-90k.

They lost 36-34 votes at the Senate.

Someone commented again that it would be an unfair break for Porsche buyers...what a load of rubbish..what Porsche costs under $90k?

Salesman just rang me (@1745) to tell me that my original contract did not include the LCT! The salesman who originally put together my contract (he's since left), was adamant that it did include LCT and that my contract price would be reduced by ~$1350 if LCT blocked by the Senate. Buggered if I'm going to pay more than the contract price!!!

The Cayman starts at $121,000 and the Boxster starts at $112,000.

I imagine that's before GST, Stamp Duty and LCT lumped on the lot.

Whoever said raising the threshold to $90k is going to give the Porkie owners a break needs to smell the sh!t their talking.

Belgium has a much harsher tax system than most countries but even they don't have this! (the gf is from Rosselare near Brugge and *she* thinks tax in Aus sucks!)

I was honestly flabbergasted when I saw that 42% of families pay no tax on aggregate.

As an unmarried but domestically de factoed young person I obviously don't get much in the way of breaks, so it rankles a lot when I see little benefit from my tax dollar.

I'd happily accept LCT if I saw a decent driver training program (get rid of P-plates ffs, L's until you can drive and skidpan training for all) and road improvements paid for by it.

But doubtless it'll just be shoved into pathetic "have a baby" incentives that'll go straight on a Widescreen TV and a 1% downpayment on a Alternative-A loan for an overpriced McMansion, raising HECs debts for the next generation to sponsor basketweaving courses and dis-incentivising anyone from actually wanting to earn money.

I'm not bitter

Yep, I will happily complain for hours about the Belgian tax rates but at least they make more sense.

I pay a lot in registration tax but it is calculated on CO2 emissions, not luxury/the price of your car. It demonstrates that the govt has an actual purpose behind the tax which is to reduce the environmental impact of cars, rather than just raping those who want to buy a nice car.

And it also means that, if I wanted, I could have bought a 120d with all the same luxury but a bit less power/emissions and paid much less registration tax. Likewise, a 520d here pays less tax than a 125i because its emissions are less.

LCT though, as mentioned, just an envy tax and an excuse for gathering revenue.

It would be very easy to do the maths on the contract to work out who is correct. So unless they do you a favour, the back side of the contract is pretty clear....

I give up. This tax is so much BS it's laughable. It's just the latest example of the current reich's (sorry regime's) active persuit of mediocrity. God forbid we might incent people to improve - no, no, no - that's not the labour (and apparently independants) way. Let's drag those that don't need or want a union rep down to the level of those that can't be bothered.

Off you go kevvie, keep those frequent flyer points ticking over. Off to New York to sort out the world economic crisis (which is his justification for this trip after being criticised for his travels) - isn't it amazing that kevvie predicted this crisis when he planned this trip months ago - I wish he'd told everyone so they could have done something abuot it - lying Pr*$#k.

But in reality, if the opposition can't defeat something as glaringly weak, and indefensible as the LCT, then they really don't have what it takes.

Rant over....
