New Forum Member--128i, sports pkg
I just traded Mini Cooper S for Montego blue BMW 128i, sport package, pirelli tires, sirius satellite radio, and gray poplar trim. This car really turns heads, including from recent BMW M3 and Porsche drivers. The 128i is a blast to drive, and I'm happy to see such positive postings in these forums.

Incidentally, which Pirelli's came on your 128i? The SP equipped 128i cabrio I drove had Goodyear NCT rubber and I'm curious as to what will be on the one I ordered. Tom |

Congrats, and nice pics! BTW, is your name a reference to the bird or the Ken Follett book?

How do you like it compared to the Cooper S, my current delimma is a new cooper s (and plan on a used 135i in a few years) vs the 128i w/ sport package. The cooper's I build online end up being about 5 grand short of my 128s so I just wondered from your perspective it's definately worth the extra cash?
Of particular interest is the trunk luggage space vs the hatch back, I've see the capacity numbers but I'm more talking about usable space w/ the seats folder down and trunk openning size. The 128i is obviosuly the better performance car but how does the road noise compare from the mini to the bmw? About the same or is the bmw significally quieter? Finally suspension feel? The cooper is notorious for having a solid suspension from the factory but how does the 128 sport compare? A little more compliant or just as tight? Thanks - anymore pics would be great - there's a serious lacking of 128 pics on this site |

2004 Mini Cooper S v. 2008 BMW 128i -- The MCS with sport and premium packages and leather was my daily driver for four years. I liked it so much, I was going to buy a new MCS convertible...until I found the 128i. The Mini drives fun. It's a go kart with leather and AC. It has a 1.6 supercharged engine. Rock hard runflat tires were later replaced for Toyos, and the suspension improved considerably. It's great on a slalom, but straight line accelleration is limited unless you really redline it. The 128i is 2 1/2 feet longer, 1 foot wider than the Mini. They are actually about the same height. With 3.0 engine and sports package, it has great handling, torque, and accelleration. It's faster with a much more solid feel. The doors are heavier, seats hold the torso better, and it is a much, much more quiet ride. There's great trunk space, even without fold-down rear seats. I averaged 26 mpg in Mini and I'm getting 22 mpg in 1er. I guess I'd say the Mini was a jackrabbit but the 1er is a panther. Overall, I'd pay the extra money and get the 1er with sports package.

Hi, everyone! This is my first post, courtesy of Jackdaws' comments. I have to wait a year for my 1 (I'm retiring in June '09--retirement present), but it's not too early to think about it.
Your car is exactly what I was thinking about getting. I was torn between Sedona Red and Montego Blue; I must say that I really, really like yours. I, too will be waiting for more info. |
