Actual Weight of 1 Series
I know its probably not the easiest thing to get done. But if anyone who is lucky enough to already own a 1 series humor all of those AutoX junkies who are on the fence and put their car on the scale as well as list the options you purchased the car with?
There has been a lot of debate about BMW "unladen" weight designation being different than "curb" weight etc etc.... How about we just cut the crap and someone pull the damn thing on a scale? Also note fuel tank level as well. THANKS!!! I am particularily interested in the 135 but I'm sure there are others who would like to know about the 128 as well.... |

You shouldn't need to put the car on a scale. The Certificate of Origin that you get should have a net weight listed.
Any 135 owners want to take a look and post it?

3413lbs full tank of fuel. The folks at MWERKS already weighed their car and they have even checked the weight at each wheel. Its all in this link:

Sorry, I thought you guys got copies of your Certificate of Origin. We get a NVIS card (New Vehicle Information Statement) here in Canada which has all the same info as the Cert. of Origin.
Any Canadian 1'ers want to look at the copy of their NVIS and post the new or shipping weight?

- Sport Package - Cold Weather package - Leather - iPod/USB adapter Interesting that Car and Driver also weighed a 135i sport, and theirs came out at 3420lbs. Pretty consistent with the MWERKS car's weight of 3413lbs. http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/..._test/(page)/1 |

CURB weight is an empty car with full fluids. Road and Track measured 3340 lbs curb weight. MWERKS appears to be a measured curb weight at 3414 lbs Car and Driver doesn't make clear the source of their 3420 lb number BMW's number seems consistent with European numbers, and obviously applies to a base model car. However the base model is not consistent in different markets. Specifically the sunroof is optional in Europe (and in Canada). That could account for 40+ lbs. It still seems to me though that the measured weights being reported are heavier than expected. How can you option in almost 200 lbs? |

Alright seems like we are getting some good information here....
What is the fuel tank capacity? The most verifable source so far appears to be the MWERKS article. Now we just need to subtract out several gallons of fuel and then we can start estimating actual race weight with DOT Rs and light rims. Is it possible to delete the sunroof option? That has to add some significant weight....I definately don't need a hole in my roof. Anyone try this? I asked my CA but he said no...but then again I knew more about the 1er than he did. |

Btw, I had my rear bumper skin off yesterday while doing the H&R Spring install... (don't ask why, I thought I needed to drop the rear of the exhaust system, which you do not have to do)... I looked for the ballast weight, and the only thing I saw that might be the culpret is a hefty metal bar that serves as crash protection, behind the bumper skin.
It looked substantial, 4' long by 5" tall by 3" thick, but it might be filled with something for weight. Either way, It's probably heavy, but needs to be there for crash worthiness (if it's the oft-fabled ballast). I saw nothing else that fits the bill, but I did not disassemble everything looking for it either. |

[quote=fe1rx;88698]BMW lists the UNLADEN weight is listed as 3373 lbs (-150 driver -15 luggage +20 fuel) = 3228 lbs CURB weight
quote] So the "unladen" weight allows for a 150 lb. driver - or is that only a Euro spec thing? Also, I think you should add 75 lbs. for fuel (90% of a 14 gal tank @ 6lbs./gal.). Of course as you say, it still doesn't equal 200 lbs. (heavy headlight washers, perhaps?). BTW, BMW still publishes a curb weight for their R1200RT motorcycle which is 10% low according to every publication that has weighed one! Tom |
