headlights
Does anyone else feel the headlights on their 135 aim low? The lights' performance is excellent but they seem to aim low for my tastes - the low beams I mean. I asked the dealer when I had the car in and they said the lights were at spec.
To compare, I have a 2006 GTI with the Xenons and I much prefer driving that car at night. The low beams just seem to be better aimed and I can see significantly further. Thoughts? |

Mine did this too. I bitched to my dealer. They raised them and now are fine.

It does feel low for me as well, but I am definitely less obnoxious than those s2000 hid which bounces in your eye at every crack in the pavement.

They are too low from the factory. It takes about 2 mintues to fix though. There's a small adjustment screw under the hood. Just park the car pointing at a wall, and give them about one full turn (keep it the same on each side) and they're good.

Thank you. Is this in the instruction manual? The position of the adj. screw?

No. They don't want you screwing with them, but they're there. They're pretty obvious when you start looking for them. One on each side, a little inboard from the center of the headlight assembly IIRC. They'll take an allen key, or a phillips head screwdriver. Quote:
A word of caution though...make these adjustments in small increments. It doesn't take more than one or one and half turns to make a large change. I would recommend making one full turn, then drive the car for a while. You don't want to crank them up to the point where they're blinding oncoming traffic, and you can certianly do that if you try. |

I had to do the same thing on my Z4. After I raised the lights no one in front of me ever flipped me off so I guess it was not too much.
Actually I parked the car on the driveway with the lights pointing at the closed garage door. I was able to see how much I raised the lights and were able to raise both by the same amount.

The correct way to do this is on level concrete in a parking lot. Aim your headlights at a wall from 20 feet or so away, and use masking tape to mark where the headlights are before and after. You probably should raise them in 1 inch increments and drive for a day or so to see the effect.

Thanks for the help! I will adjust them on my own. I was afraid to mess with them. My GTI has those self-leveling headlights and they always are at a good level for seeing at night. The 135's lights are great but don't do much good when pointed at the ground 50 feet ahead of me!
