Operating Temperature
I was driving home last night (nothing spirited, just cruising through the city) and noticed that the temperature gauge was up around the 110-120C mark. I've never noticed it up this high before (in fact my car usually takes forever before it even moves from the 70C mark).
Is this normal (and I've been oblivious up until now), or should I get it checked out? What temperature do most people's cars run at?

110 - 120 sounds about right. My car will operate between 235 and 250 F, which is about that.
Just wait until you get spirited, on a fun day I will hit 270. Cant wait to get a Dinan Intercooler/Oil Cooler. |

Yeah we have Fahrenheit here in the States. Its so stupid, most of my class work is in Celsius of Kelvin and yet I read Fahrenheit?
Although working in degrees Rankine is always fun. |

My temp's normally 118 for oil & 98 for water. At the track last week went to 137 for oil and 88 for water. Thermometer indicator on Performance Wheel was flashing at that temperature..?

Just to confirm, the temperature gauge on the dash is for water or oil?

The ECU records the coolant (water) temp, but the dash board chooses to display oil temperature.

Yeah, 88 Taka. For some reason water runs cooler at the track (more airflow?) and oil higher. Wouldn't mind an extra oil cooler...

I better record my coolant temp.
Strange coz WAY recorded over 110 on a 20 degree day. I am not disbuting the reading coz it is read from the steering wheel means that is what recorded from the ECU.... just sound very strange to me coz that is what I expect it would run on street. You pushing hard at all??? |

Well in my mind I was I don't think the Porsche Cup driver who rushed up behind me thought I was though
It may have been about 30 deg at QR. When I ran at Lakeside a couple of months ago (~20deg ambient?) the water temp was about the same at 89 deg but the oil was much cooler at 120. I don't think I was at full throttle as much at Lakeside.

Hey Tim,
I'm seeing roughly about 100 coolant most of the time when driving on the road and 110ish oil temp on my performance steering wheel. Push it a little (with in reason on the road) and i see 120-125oil temp, and i have an aux oil cooler. I haven't tracked my car but your oil temp is high man, only a few degrees off limp mode. So either try an aux oil cooler or change to a 10w 60 type oil. I've tried that in the past and results have been that these lower the oil temps. I am trying different cooling options as well in way's car at the moment, so i should know after his next event in November. If BMW ever get the Perf kit going the upgraded oil cooler and 850w upgrade fan should be a goer, providing they will let us buy it without the tune....and it doesn't cost us a fortune. |
