GM looking to buy part of BMW
Not sure if anyone heard this rumor or supposedly it isnt a rumor anymore, but i got it from a reliable source ( my uncle-in-law's brother who works in development in Detroit for GM) but GM is looking to buy a stake in BMW. Not sure what this will mean for BMW or GM but just thought it was interesting.

I'm not too sure this will happen. GM is hardly in the position to be buying shares of other companies.
Also, the controlling share of BMW is still owned by a family who continues to want to maintain that control over the company. I forget the last name of the family, Klause? Something German anyhow

This has been the rumor for almost a decade now,l its either Ford or GM. truth is, with the way BMW is growing now, noone can force itself on BMW anymore, the company is worth too much now. Besides that, the Quandt family which owns about 1/2 of BMW and saved the company along time ago, have always refused to sell the company, and are pretty pigheaded about it. GM or Ford or whoever will never be able to buy BMW, especially when its growing and profiting the way it is now. Old rumor, crappy rumor, let it die

I wonder, if GM was in such a good position, why offer the employee discounts on all their cars? If I was an employee, I would be like WTF??

What the deal with American car manufacturers guys? Why they have big unefficient and powerful engines that lack handling and cheap looking interior designs (not to mention the exterior except some self proven models). Is it so hard for them to take esthetics into consideration? |

Yeah, that would suck. Just when Saabs started to get interesting (and stopped looking like Secret Squirrel's car) GM bought them. I would never buy any GM product again.

No car company can survive with its soul intact if it bears the stink of GM, just look at Saab. I agree, GM is in no position financially to buy anyone, however, I must disagree with Socom; GM's biggest problem is not the healthcare and pension benefits their employees have EARNED, the problem rests with the overall direction in which its chieftains have decided to take the company. The over reliance on SUVs which has come to haunt GM is but one example--decisions in which the rank and file employees have no say.

GM trucks - GOOD. My little 2002 Sonoma has had its nose smashed by my son (son was fine, truck needed about 6K repairs), the tail smashed by uninsured motorist (aftermarket replacement gates suck!) yet two weeks ago I was able to haul 100 6x8x16 bricks and 50 2x8x16 caps in 1 load That was nearly 4000lbs in a 4x8 bed. 33K miles, only crash repairs and regular oil changes.

GM may lay off 20,000 people. BMW will never sell.

Wow, what a thread. First of all, it's my opinion that GM (the company and the cars) is not nearly as bad as people say. In fact, GM credit alone is probably worth at least 80% of GM's current value.
Anyways, I would advise not confusing the companies with the cars they make. And remember this is a public internet forum, so take that into consideration when people weigh in on the "valuations" of these companies. I did want to point out that GM's market cap is $5B more than Harley Davidson. ($19B vs $14B) Quote:
