Coolant leak - need help
My 2009 135i is leaking coolant. It filled up the plastic undercarriage and spilled out. I removed the plastic undercarriage got the car up on stands and tried to see where it's leaking.
I cleaned the whole area, turned the car on so the water pump can cycle but no leak. I flushed the coolant a couple times with distiller water as well. I guess I'm wondering if maybe I just cannot get the car hot enough for the leak to reoccur... Does that seem right? Originally I thought if the issue was the pump just by cycling it (turning on the car) I would see the leak. Once I confirm where is coming from ill get it fixed. Likwly it's the water pump (has 160000km on it) but I just want to be sure before doing it. Any help would be appreciated. It's late I hope I'm not rambling. I'll post more info tomorrow and pictures. |

One last thing. From my research the n54 electric water pumps just fail the car overheats and goes into limp mode. I haven't read much about a coolant leak... Which is what I have. Also I haven't received any alarms on the car.

How many miles are on your car? I have an '08 and mine failed at 72K. Went into limp mode as you said. But, I was less than a mile from home.. so I let it cool and was able to get home get it flat bedded to the dealer. Not a cheap fix. But they replace the WP, thermostat, flush the system and replace coolant. I'm at 92K now and no issues.

After more research and talking to some Techs they said it's probably not the pump but rather the thermostat that's leaking... I drove the car with a couple hard pulls and temps didn't go above normal but when I parked the car I found leaking coolant (in my case just ionized water since I flushed the system so many times). I'm going to get is fixed and will need to make a call on the spot if I'm going to replace the thermostat and pump or just the thermostat. Pump had 163k kms. Any suggestions or has anyone seen this?
