Dackelone i did read it, but let's again.

Dealer runs codes, sees that VANOS timing is off. They find a "sheared off / broken bolt in the exhaust side of VANOS." As of today, they replaced the exhaust VANOS (so far $2700 out of warranty.) My SA says the car sounds better at idle (was ticking bad when I first took it in) but the computer still says "VANOS is not activating."

Now they want to replace the intake VANOS and tensioner for another $2000, $4700 plus tax total so far.

All this after PROcede on Map 1 auto tune driven normally on the road with no other mods... How can a bolt just snap like that? I'm looking at $5000+ out of pocket and no car for two weeks on a 2011 135i with 20,000 miles on it...

Anyone with a tuned N55, please be careful....

additional $2000 (this additional fix, we don't know if it was
covered under warranty or out of pocket.)
grand total is 4700$, which 2700$, OP stated as covered.

then he goes on to question the tune, if this could cause the
problem. Then he states that he's 5000$+ out of pocket.

there's some info missing, Dackelone - and on the other
pages, other members go on to say it should be covered because
there was no tune when taken in to the dealer.

I want to know if OP fess'd up bout having a tune, thus red flag'n the
dealership, then all will make sense.
then the say'n "u pay to play" will apply.

+ OP is in Hawaii - there's not really anywhere else on the island
he can go for service. //

WHATS WITH ALL THE MYSTERIOUS BS IN THIS THREAD????

I think everyone needs to know:

1) Did the dealer ultimately know you had a tune?
2) If "no", what was their reasoning for not covering the car under warranty

OP, you owe us at least that....

Yes, dealer knew of a tune. Apparently someone who doesn't like me very much and knows I had a tune also knows someone at the dealership. I had removed the tune before going in, but I also had a half broken clip on one of the hard to reach plugs due to me rushing the uninstall so that was extra proof.

If you remove the tune, chances are they won't find it unless they really looked for it, and they will on a big job.

Advice? If you have a tune, just don't tell anyone about it.

From reading more on this, it looks like I could have just replaced the solenoids for a whole lot less money, but I'll never know. Happy to cut my losses and move on.

I've since gotten rid of the 135 as the DCT had been giving me issues for months. (unrelated to this.)

Sorry about not commenting here earlier, I don't have a 135 anymore so no need to visit these forums.

Thanks for getting back to us. Does anyone know of any maintenance type procedure people are doing with the bolts? I thought I read somewhere something about replacing them when doing spark plugs. I kind of remember them saying it was not that horrible or expensive to do yourself. That does not seem to be the case here.

That is bullshit, make them prove it, or tell them you want to transfer to a different dealership that wont try to rip them off.

They must prove that YOU caused the damage, they wont be able to and they are trying to stick you with their bill.

Partially resurrecting an old thread here, but my N55 is in the shop for this exact same reason--sheared VANOS bolt. 18,800 miles on the car. Here's the kicker--my N55 never had a tune. 100% stock.

We will see what transpires in the next day or two....

Update? Is this really something we need to worry about?

Resurrecting an old thread. I am in the market for a 135i. I'd like more proof that I, in 2015, do not have to worry about this vanos mess.

get the VIN number of the car you intend to buy, then call BMW to check if the bolts have been already replaced under warranty - they will have it on their computer system if its been done already....simple.

There is a VANOS Bolts recall. Here is the thread:

You can check a VIN here for recalls:

I dropped my car off to have them perform the the battery cable and vanos recall. I was out of warranty, but the recalls are still covered.
Supposedly both can lead to stalling.
Car was stalling occasionally when coming to a stop or slowing down. Hopefully these may correct that issue.

What transmission do you have? I heard some say it can stall when going slow or coming to a stop with the DCT.

IF you have a DCT I would also ask for a SW update. That would(should only run an hour or two's labor rate) when paying for it. Maybe they would throw it in under the recall ?

Yes, I have the dct.
I didn't think of asking about that. They just called me to let me know it's ready.
Is that sw update better or can it be detrimental?
I am new to the bmw, formerly a supra guy so all this hpfp, electric water pump, dme stuff has me a bit worried..lol
