Lift points underneath car

Took car to an independent paint shop last week. They put it up on a lift and I noticed they didn't use the little plastic lift points BMW has on bottom of car. Instead they positioned the 4 lift points be die them directly on the frame. Everything looks ok but could this cause any issues. I might have to take it back to them for a bit more work. Should I mention it? Curious what they are for and what to do, thanks!

Those "little plastic lift points" you are talking about are called lifting pads and yes they are supposed to use them but they don't always and if they're careful and position the lift on the frame it shouldn't do any damage. I've actually seen some E82's missing 1 or 2 lifting pads and they seem ok. Tell them to use them - what can it hurt - it's your car!

You shouldn't lift directly on the plastic. You need to put a block of wood or metal into the plastic and lift on that. They probably do not have the necessary blocks at the garage. Without them, I would lift on the frame.

But that's what the lifting pads are for.

There is a special tool meant to adapt to that pad. If you use a regular jack on it, it will deform the pad. I bought my car with the pads all deformed... use wood or something to protect them.

What about a regular lift since that is what OP is talking about?

Yea I was talking about a full car hydraulic lift found in a shop.

I usually put it on the rail, next to the jack slot (think that's part of the chasiss)

Because these cars are small, it's not always possible to have the lift align with the pads (as is the case with the lift I use). I lift mine as mentioned above, it's fine.
