Is this speculation or do you have inside information about this?

Perhaps BimmerEngineer works for BMW AG in Death Valley hot weather testing dept? Just a wild guess though.

Out of interest, have you driven the 1M?

The new M3 won't need 550hp, it won't even need 450 hp, because it will be lighter. It will probably have a smaller engine than the 1M & have a high revving inline-6 (twin-scroll), tri-turbo, with loads of torque. Producing about the same HP as the s63. (ie: more efficient)

There is no reason to just add HP for the sake of it, unless u buy BMW just to drag... ()? BMW has a long racing heritage and overpowered dragsters, is not one of them.

So please understand, asking for moar hp, for the sake of it, that isn't BMW's philosophy, who's ideology is squarely rooted in road courses. Once you have a car that can squirt to 60mph in seconds, it stops being about horsepower and more about other things, as you try an achieve the best track time. Such as chassis set-up, width of tires, stability, etc. when considering performance of the whole package..

Many have complained that BMW has been neglecting these things. Hence the E30 M3's reference all over. The 1M is about fundamentals and phun..!! Number don't mean much when u can't stop driving the thing. By your standards, the E30 M3 should not be able to put smiles on people faces, because it only has <250hp..? After one lap in a E30 M3 you'll forget all about who teh phuck has the best lap time in ur circle, but who can have the most phun around the track..?

Traditionally, with the right M sauce, "specs" rarely mattered to the owner, or even some publications..!

excellent post.
its not about Numbers....

Its about balance. Hence, I haven't "chipped" my car like most people. Whenever someone asks about my car not being "chipped" they always have a "disgusted" face. However, what they dont' know is that I have full coilovers, sway bars, highperformance brake pads, brake lines, semi slick tires, strut bars, corner balanced chassis....and other stuff I will not name. Pretty much everything but leaving the "engine" alone.

Amazingly, their disgusted face became a face of confusion at the Time attack event.

Not to mention a little HPDE goes a long way to making a car fast. An "under powered" car in the hands of the right driver will mop the floor with a chipped car and a meat handed driver any day!

AMEN! Although I don't necessarily think the F30/F32 motor will be smaller than the 1M..... but the folks at M did indicate the twin scroll turbos will be in all the next generation M cars and that the next generation cars will be lighter than their predecessors.

An M1 CSL with 450 HP would really be nice. Would be the closest thing to the M3 CSL, and faster than both M3 CSL and M3 GTS. Would also love an M1 CSL-R that would eat the 911 GT2 RS!

Well, but all this shows that M1 and Cayman have more potential than their bigger brothers M3 and 911.

To Scott: What car is on your avatar ? BMW 8 Series Coupé ?
M1 CSL-R and eat gt2 rs. I like that.

but not gonna happen though.

Maybe BMW knows that people will buy weak cars because of the "excellent chassis dynamics" so they simply reflash a N54 instead of modifying the head and changing the turbos out to something besides ancient TD03s for the 1M......
I think it makes more sense to focus on dynamic instead of hp war. if m3 has 550hp, then the next enzo gonna have 1500hp, z06 with 900hp, etc... and you will constantly spin your tires in the first 3-4 gears. where will it end?

That's great news. As to the M3 engine, it will be either 3l or 3,5l.

Best regards,

It ends when you cannot fit in the price range or you cannot fit enough rubber. There IS a market for 1000HP cars. Just like there is a market for a 1M, people that want the best M car they can get while staying below the M3 price range.

I've been in a 537WHP car that hooked from a dead stop, and it FEELS GREAT! (on drag radials though)

451HP (about 383WHP) with 285/35 "ultra" summer tires on the back of a 1M would be fine. 1st would probably spin at WOT so feather a bit, 2nd would hook and everyone would LOVE the pull.

340HP (about 289WHP) is more like, "Oh it feels strong, wish the exhaust note was better."

Wha *IF* BMW under rates the 1M HP just like they did when the N54 came out. In both cases BMW will not want to gut M3 sales.

When the N54 came out they (BMW) said it had 300 Hp. We now know its more like 330 Hp. What IF BMW says the 1M only has 340 Hp, but its more like 380 Hp?

Would a 380 Hp 1M be too close for (sales) comfort to the M3 specs? You betcha!!!

IF they(BMW) did it in the past (& they did!)... they will "probably" do it again!

I agree. Also guys, I'm not saying this is a disappointing car. I WILL buy one and I WILL achieve my horsepower goals regardless of what it comes with from the factory.

I just think it would be awesome of BMW and save me some mods and time if it came at 451 rated HP.

There is no way the new "affordable M car" is going to have as much power as an M3 GTS. As others have suggested, that engine is most likely in the works for the next generation M3 as it meets the goal of adding more power but also becoming more efficient.
