Switched the 128i to DD duty as I perform a full paint correction and application of Gtechniq coating on my GTi.

Took it to the dealer for a battery replacement. These cars have so much power drain, I guess not being driven much (3k/yr avg.) killed it prematurely. It was parked next to its big brother, pre-LCI 135i with the same color scheme, had to grab a photo.

That'll be a $400-$600 ream job.

Installed Split Second Turbo Tuner
Installed a Split Second Turbo Tuner. I know... Way old technology, but 40hp/50tq... Best $35 I've ever spent, EVER. Within minutes, a significant, noticeable difference that will grow with time as the ECU adapts. This more than enough for me.

Track day prep! Installed a BMS CDV and flushed the clutch and brakes with Motul RBF 600. I can definitely feel the difference with the CDV, especially the 1-2 and shifting into 1st at a slow roll. It generally feels smoother and more direct. Now I'm ready for Thunderhill in a couple weeks!

Anyway, I ended-up doing it myself, had the paint mixed for me ($70), sprayed them off the car in my garage. Came out ok... Slightly cooler white, probably because the clear-coat on the car has yellowed since 2008. But really, only I see it. Putting them on (and talking old one's off) can be done in 30 minutes. They just screw/plastic rivet on. |

Lost the water pump on Saturday. Car went into limp mode and I had to cut over from the fast lane on the 5 to get to the shoulder. $1,200 repair, covered by my CarMax warranty, so I'm only out my $100 deductible

Glad you and your 1er made it out of there safely. $100 deductible doesn't sound too bad at all.

Great job getting that warranty! I've got you beat with mine though, only a $100 deductible! haha

I'm still surprised to see the water pump failing at such low mileage (33,500). The funny thing is, a friend of mine had his water pump fail at 90,000 miles on his '07 530i, within 24 hours of mine. |

Yes, that does seem like pretty low miles for the water pump to fail. I'm not that far behind you. Also, Dinan says "water pump speed increased, to improve cooling" with my S2 tune, so we shall see what that means as far as longevity is concerned.

And I didn't know you got the Dinan tune. I have to say after driving a Dinan tuned M235i, I'm amazed at how the tune wakes up the engine. I'd love to have one myself. I also have a theory about the water pump. My guess is that it's programmed to run faster and longer (perhaps even after the engine shuts off, like the N63) due to the heat associated with the turbo. I see a fair amount of turbo BMW's needing new water pumps before 40,000 miles, while the NA engines that use the same electric pump usually see them last much longer. |

I figured they were slightly different but shared the same overarching design since BMW switched from belt-driven to electric. I assumed the version on the turbo engines was beefed in one of the ways you listed. Regardless, it doesn't seem to be enough.
