Good to know. My B8 dampers probably have "inferior" damping specs to TCK SA or DA, but the spring rates you provided offer a ballpark to aim for at least. If Swift and Bilstein support ever respond to my email, I will post their replies here...

For the rear we can order it a bit short since with the HPA rear height adjusters we can get away with a max 2.75' of adjustments. For the fronts its going to be a PITA. |

I received nothing from Bilstein support yet, but here's the response from Swift ...
"We do make custom springs but then in order for us to make the custom spring we would need exact specs (length, rate, coil count) in order to make it. We will not be able to make a custom spring based off of what you expect the outcome of the vehicle to sit. If you can get all that data then we will be able to make the spring in about 40 days."

I think someone relatively well versed in car suspension geometry and design could help with that. Maybe pick fe1rx brain. The man seems to have a lot of our cars suspension down pretty well.

Simple excel spread sheet will do. Will need to know various dimensions including weight on that spring (% would be fine) and maybe the total dynamic loading that area will see. I think fe1rx already has tested and verified the spring rate of a tire so that variable can be taken out. Coil count may just be a feeler time variable based on what other manufacturers have already but its essential to prevent coil bind. Over than that, plug it into an excel spread sheet and you should be able to extrapolate the variables Swift is looking for.
You can try giving these guys a call also... http://www.coilsprings.com/sports_cars.aspx |

Response back from Bilstein support:
"We can confirm that the B8 valving will accommodate modest spring rate increases. 50-100lbs per corner should be ok. Thanks. If he's referring to stock BMW spring rates, then the Spec-R is as much rate as I can use. I will confirm with them ... BMW M sport = 120/350 lbs/in. Swift Spec-R springs = 201/503 lbs/in.

Just noticed on mod barg*ains site they have this little chart.
In case you did find that we could run higher spring rates with the B8s, would it make sense to run the 335i springs? I wonder if the drop maybe wouldn't be as much as the 135i designed springs. |

I wouldn't put too much effort into comparing spring rates across different cars. The distance of the spring from some particular pivot point, the length of an arm acting on it, the geometry of the various links, etc. all factor in. 200lbf/in on car A coould be "equivalent" to 150lbf/in on car B. Comparing across the various 1-Series springs is great, but looking at 3-series is a bit apples / oranges.
Unless of course you are dead certain they are identical, then you may have something. But if they aren't identical... |

Only reason I compared is because they have pretty much the same everything. After market coilover kits, and strut/dampener kits, swaybars, they are all billed as for e82 OR e90. Maybe Harold from HP Autosport can provide some insight?

Depending on what you are doing with the car, dampers and other suspension mods, the rates can vary. Are you going to feel a 100 lb increase in rear spring rates? Likely not, at least not to the 99% of us, especially with all the rubber bushings in place.

The OP of this thread is already running Swift springs, he is looking to double or so the front rate without coilovers.

Harold supplied the springs and camber plates for my pss. 7" front length ended up being required- treat it the same as the Ohlins, but with 60mm springs. |
