Hey Scott is the new X5 scheduled for reveal at a major show? I think I read somewhere that its SOP is August 2018 which suggests it should be announced in the next couple of months.

I guess a lot of people in this thread don't know that most car shows that exist today are run by the local dealers and have very little connection with the manufacturers. This is why you rarely see prototypes and major introductions in the US.

Perhaps some manufacturers do this I know I can speak for Ford since I work there the models are specifically made and sent from the corporate fleet. Most of the cars may end up getting sold but most of the product specialists we send are Ford employees of some sort that are chosen to represent the product. There have been cases where we hired professionals alot as well. I think its the way it should be run by actual manufacturers not some dealers like you said with no passion.

This story makes sense now. At the time I was commenting how it seemed they put as little effort into it as possible.
BMW was also a tad less impressive than Audi and Mercedes in Detroit this year. But it still attracted a huge crowd, especially the M4 CS and new M5.

Mercedes put a lot of effort into their display. There were like 4 different vintage G wagons there to accompany the new model. The new CLS coupe and a Maybach showed up too. All vehicles had Designo interiors.

Save for the SUVs, all three German brands kept most of their vehicles locked. I remember in Seattle and Vancouver it was just Porsche who did that.

Interesting to see that so many brands are pulling out. But if Europe already has a show in October as well, you don't want to stretch yourself thin I suppose?

Autoshows don't bring excitement anymore. I used to attend them every year in the 1990s, but now, it's a waste.

The upside is that BMW is going to use the cost savings to homologate an M3 Touring for the US. I'm surprised more people didn't know that.

My Old Man was not a car guy, but my Grandfather was an engineer. So I must have inherited my fascination of design and quality engineering. My first time at the New York International Auto Show, standing around the Ferrari booth with what I would say was at least 100 people drooling over their cars and a specific model. As a young kid fascinated by what I was seeing, one of the Ferrari reps asked if I would like to sit in they're one-of-a-kind car. I replied "yes", so he scoop me up and put me in the car, everyone freaked out. And I was like hell yeah!!! Those things stick with you.

Back in 1999 BMW had the real James Bond World Not Enough: 007 Silver Z8 on display. Kids see that and never forget it, and one day dream to purchase something as cool. Remember kids grow up and become future drivers and owners and loyal fans.

Perhaps it's time to remarket and properly advertise these car shows, and also make them more interactive, meaning test drive some models.

Regards to BMW they should always have all their models including all their motorcycles to cross pollinate.

One year I went to the New York International Motorcycle Show and KTM was a no-show, that showed me that they didn't give a shit and we're on the decline in our neck of the woods. So I instantly eliminated KTM from my wishlist, especially when the local dealership closed.

***Also one great thing about the car shows is that you can spend as much time looking at, sitting in, soaking up the brand without having to go to a snobby dealership and be treated poorly because of your younger age or appearance. And the salesman's don't want to answer any questions unless you're purchasing. And I cannot stand that still to this day!!!

If BMWs not gonna be at some car shows, then they need to have more local events, that would make sense.
I agree. I am a "touch and feel" guy as well. A personal experience makes a huge impact on future decisions. Also, auto shows displayed rally vehicles, prototypes and mostly cars that are available. For example Individual cars can show what a manufacturer can do and what you can buy. Not too many Individuals out there and very little chances to spot one and convince the owner to show you "around".
Youtube and other internet sites do nothing for me, including comparo's and reviews. Yeah, might contribute with some information but my feeling and perception is more important since what I care for might be a thing that is not important for the reviewer.

I went there for the last time last year, there's just way too many automakers missing for it to be considered a quality show. The Toronto autoshow has to be considered one of the best these days - everyone is there.

That's the first time you'll ever hear a sentence with "BMW" and "Pulls out". Maybe more of that would have stopped all the random models being produced....

Went to the 2012 NY Autoshow, fell in love with the 13 Boss 302 Laguna Seca and 13 Shelby GT500. Went to buy one and every Ford dealer had $10k markup over MSRP so I bought a 2013 M3 ZCP for $5k under MSRP and got treated like royalty at the Performance Center delivery. Now a 2017 M3 ZCP and a 2017 M2 later I've never looked hard at another Mustang. Tru story brah. So yeah BMW pulling out of the Detroit Autoshow and spending marketing dollars elsewhere - two thumbs in my book.

Talked about this with colleague from Mercedes-Benz. Removal from NAIAS for 2019 is because no official new product for that quarter and the new move to October that they also see will compromise the larger international bi-annual events of Paris and Tokyo.
BMW Also on the same page as they have no new product for North America at that quarter as focus will solely be on the all-new BMW 1er to debut in Geneva in March.
