M Hatchback Anyone?
BMW just sent me this so I thought I'd share it with the 1M community. I figure the more input they get the better.

It came from BMWCCA and I'm in the USA so I wouldn't assume that. It's funny this should come up now. I bought a golf R 6 weeks ago for a daily driver and in my travels over the last few weeks I've seen hatchbacks everywhere I look. Hatchbacks have been slow sellers here and it seems their popularity is growing recently. It makes sense that BMW is looking at a hot hatch stateside.

More details here: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=656418 If you are a BMW CCA member, please log in and vote. And more importantly (for owners of non-M cars), they are also asking about optional LSDs. Although it's for the F30, it's a start. |

For some reason the rear visibility on the 135i hatch isn't too hot- I bought an E46 M3 instead after trying it in Germany. But I love hatches, and I am encouraged by the fact that Americans are starting to... ignore them less. I haven't driven the new golf R yet, but I like my R32/ 1M combo. How do you like the new R?

Yup, got the same e-mail today and voted YES to both (give us a LSD as a standalone option on non-M cars, and bring the M135i hatch).
Heck, Audi brought the TT-RS to the USA based on a Facebook poll, hopefully this will go somewhere!

I voted for both. The other half of the Survey is for Limited Slip Diffs as an option.

A little revisionist history... A little poll like this in the Roundel magazine of BMW CCA got the E36 M3 produced... And believe me... BMW is keenly aware that they have no true enthusiast cars in the US right now for under 50K not named MINI. |

Even Audi of America, adhering to a fairly conservative strategy (as far as their quattro GmbH models go) claims they brought the TT-RS to the US because of responses they got from the poll that was held on Facebook (and in fact upped the HP of the US model to 360 vs 340 everywhere else in the world as Yanks wanted moar powar!)

Last I heard they were not bringing the F20 in the US and Audi was not bringing the new generation A3 in the US next year either (though there are noises about a sedan version of the next generation A3 coming to the US). So if you want a 'premium hatchback' this year your only choice is an A3 (end of life model) or hope that BMW does bring the X1 in the US later this year (not a hatchback but pretty close). Or get a station wagon...
All this because supposedly Yanks don't buy hatchbacks! I don't know, here in the bay area you can't throw a stick down the road without hitting an A3 hatchback, they are everywhere and now even available with Diesel and are still selling for a premium price (don't bother asking for less than MSRP, they want list). |
