Since we are all talking about Porsche's... here is one of my favorite videos on the factory. Just LOOK what kind of effort went into building the "early" cars...

Btw... I believe this film "Made by Hand" was filmed by some of the original PCA members out of Potomac Region(PCA).

He needs to get on it ASAP. Market is simply heading through the roof.

Very nice.

Mine is of the last generation that was truly made by hand.

Don't see why you should feel that way, considering both of their origins trace back to the same man.

And who knows what Porsche would be without VW, Porsche went through some serious problems in the 90's.

I actually welcome VAG's quality control, it basically means we won't ever see 996 standards again. In case you haven't realized, Volkswagens are pretty damn nice nowadays.

If you've ever sat in an 996, or early Boxster- even worse Cayenne, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. The 997.2 GTS, GT3/RS are great examples of what these companies can do together. The 991 on the other hand, has some, err... evolving to do.

VW/Audi are trash cars, with crap reliability, andIt's only a matter of time before you start seeing Golf based Porsche products. Can't wait till the dbag VW owners start putting wheels with the wrong offset and roofracks on 911s.

Hah, I just gave her the full wash/wax this weekend, and scrubbed down her new home. Very weird car to wash given the dramatic curves around the headlights/rear quarters.

Keep that thing clean!

Are you going for Steve Wong on this? Pretty much a must have mod on the american heavily restricted 3.2 engine.

How is the 915 gearbox shifting?

Steve Wong is definitely on the future list of things to do, but I want to make sure I have maintenance squared away first. Full fluid swaps, valve adjustment, bushings, and so on. Also not sure yet if I want to grab the Supersprint cat bypass pipe for it or no.

As for the 915(which I quite like actually), I finally got some free time last weekend to start some of the projects I have geared up for the 911. One of the first is that I wanted to replace/improve all the bushing from the transmission output shaft all the way to the lever, and added a spring return and gate to the 1-2 plane to make it easier for others to know what they are doing.

First step was removing everything:

At this point I decided I wanted to delete the 1988 aftermarket radio the car came with. Factory radio delete panel is already on the way. Don't worry, that brown is old adhesive, not rust.

Most of the radio junk I removed. Speakers will come later when I do something like RS door panels.

Fresh new bushing for the ball socket on the bottom of the shift lever:

Replaced the shift coupler(first step off the trans) bushings with solid brass, and installed new rubber boots everywhere.

Modified the 915 shift housing to have a spring return for the 1-2 plane:

Added a gate for 1 and 2 on the shift housing. And don't worry, that band clamp was for fitment purposes. Will be tack welded on.

It's half the fun of owning them for me. Plus it's always much cheaper to keep up with the maintenance than to pay for the repairs when you don't. Case in point, the bushings I replaced run $35-$80 for all of them, depending on what you pick. Rebuilding a 915 because sloppy bushings caused you to miss a shift or grind away gear teeth is $2000+. Easy choice for me.

Everything is back together now and I celebrated with a better steering wheel.

Sound rational to me! Nice project! Do you also have a project topic on a porsche related forum?

No, I probably should. PelicanParts is the only way to go if you are an aircooled guy. The wealth of talent/information on that site is unbelievable. I mean hell, one of their most active sections is the DIY engine rebuild subforum.

Thanks.

The entire car has been on hold for the last few weeks as I'm having the seat belts re-webbed. Probably the only project that I will outsource as I simply don't want to risk it. Turn around time is over a month though.
