ahhhh, intakes.... one of the great mysteries of bum dynos...
Intakes make more noise, thus people sometimes associate that with more power because they can hear the air going in and the engine noise, this leads your mind and bum dyno to believe more hard work is being done by the engine. I can see intakes working once you've got downpipes and better exhaust, but untill such time, don't expect gains. (id even be surprised if there's more then a 2-3 hp gain on the stock motor, which let's be honest, a dyno is too inconsistent to tell you if you gained 2hp.) |

I recently dynoed my bone stock N55 with 6-speed manual in 4th gear and it put down 261whp/276wtq on a Mustang Dyno.

those are very similar to the hp numbers i put down on a mustang dyno with a cobb stage 1 except my torque numbers are quite a bit higher. Last pulls for me with COBB and DCI's was ~310whp/370lb/ft but comparing the curves to my pulls with factory airbox i lost 5-10 hp across the entire range from 4500-7000 with the DCI's
yes you will lose some power with an intake, the stock manifold really helps keep the IAT's down in subsequent pulls, but i personally keep my intake on because the sound is worth losing 5-10 hp for... when doing multiple pulls back to back you can slowly watch the IAT's go up and the top end power consistently go down and down and down nothing a new FMIC and a stock airbox can fix if you are looking to up your numbers consistently

Why is nobody commenting on the shitty shape of that hp/tq curve, it has more jagged peaks and valleys than a serrated knife.... Pretty shitty looking imho.

Dunno about FMIC... kinda promised the future MRS Badger I'd take it easy on the modding for a while. I might not even be able to keep my car much longer, we need a wagon/suv and she drives 70 miles each way to work so I might have to get her a Mini Cooper or something and trade this thing in for an Audi Volvo if I'm lucky. |

most of the tuners haven't actually cracked the entire ECU. We (my guys at Eurocharged) have unlocked a BUNCH more layers of the dme coding and I'll be getting a reflash with a dyno again next week so we will see. The HP should come up a bunch and HOPEFULLY the car will push over 400ft/lbs of torque to the wheels.

anthracite. Most people probably wouldn't even notice the difference between them and the VB3's I had on the car before. They're almost identical except for the concavity.

These engines produce a lot of torque at low rpm, pretty much 100% before 2000rpm, but that graph starts at about 4000rpm. What gives? Also, the torque curve looks like it takes a huge dump starting about 4800rpm. Might need some tuning. HP looks decent still climbing up to about 6400rpm. Which makes the torque curve look even more strange, looks like a diesel. I wish modern turbo engines would be tuned to smooth out the broader power band rather than reverse the curve of older turbo tech where you built power up high. But, it was easier to control and at high revs throttle response was very quick. Over 300lb ft of torque below 2000rpm? It's a waste really, as traction is sacrificed and if you don't modulate it properly you're wasting your tires. I would think that one of tuners for modern turbo's would develop a tune that would give a smoother, linear power curve instead of just huge BIG torque at low rpms. But then, big numbers sell to people who don't understand there is more to it than just a big number. Last edited by RPM90; 05-17-2011 at 05:16 PM.. |
