Wheel fitment: stock ride height vs. lowered

Hey guys, I recently purchased a 2011 135i and as you can expect, I have caught the upgrade bug. I want to go wider on the tire/wheels, especially up front. I've been searching and reading a lot of posts lately but most of them are using lowered setups. Because I'm going to use the care as a daily driver and the roads around western pa are like a bombed out runway, I want to keep the car at the stock ride height. Anyhow, does the car's ride height matter when looking at fit?? My guess would be no as the the suspension is moving thru the same range of motion, it's just starting off farther into it's travel. But I've never messed with this stuff and would appreciate any help or advice.

Your less likely to run into issues if you stay with the stock ride height, although some wheel setups will require camber plates. If you plan to run coil overs at some point, that's where thing can get a bit tricky. On certain coil overs, the spring is longer than stock, which lowers the spring perch causing interference with the tire. This can be fixed by ordering shorter springs and in some cases using spacers. Your best bet is to call a couple of the companies familiar with the 135i suspension such as Aftermarket Performance EXpress (aka: APEX) and HP Autowerks. These guys are super friendly and will spend the time to explain your options.

The ride height should be factored in when choosing wheels, however you should still be able to find nice fitting wheels even on stock suspension.

We typically recommend an 18x8.5 ET45/18x9.5 ET50 or 19x8.5 ET45/19x9.5 ET50 for the 1-series, which is still fairly aggressive, but wouldn't really pose any major issues, as long as you don't get tires that are too tall. For areas with poorly kept roads, 18s are probably more ideal.

Should fit similarly to this.

Is there any chance of running a square wheel and tire combo with stock suspension? Like say 245 or 255 tires on either 9 or 9.5" wide rims?

Square 245s work on 8 or 8.5, but not 9 or 9.5.

8.5 up front is about as wide as you want to go.
