Winter Tire Question: 1 set of rims or 2?
My wife and I just bought a 135i convertible last night. Actually chose it over the M3!
We live in Colorado and suddenly realized we may need winter tires. Our other cars have all been all-wheel drive. The question is, do most people buy new rims and have two complete sets, or just buy the tires and go through a mounting process twice a year?? And is there a magical place to store the unused tires that doesn't include eating garage space?? thanks! rod. |

Visit tirerack and get some wheels with snows thru Gill. I have some Blizzaks and I was VERY happy in the snow. Do not waste your time mounting and balancing your snows/summers on the stock rims. The cost adds up and your wheels will get damaged. The runflats are not easy to mount or remove. If you search this site there was a really cool wall/ceiling mount for your spare set of wheels/tires. It is a metal rack that mounts to the wall and the ceiling in you your garage. You store the wheels up out of the way plus it had a nice clean look to it.

I did a quick search...it is at www.tirerack.com. They sell a tire storage rack for $129. Go to the site they have a picture.

For a $129 you can build an awfully big tire rack with 2x4's, a handful of nails / screws, and some sweat-equity. One of the best things I did over 15yrs ago.
As to two or one set of wheels...the cost of a second set of wheels will be more than offset within three or four changes as compared to the cost of semi-annual mounting & balancing, plus they're no wait.

+1 on the two sets.
I have Dunlop Wintersport M3's, and am very happy with them. Got them from TireRack. I thought that global warming was supposed to take care of all this snow and cold though. Why are any of us buying winter tires? LOL! Global Warming is planet-wide...but can result in significant localized decreases in temperature. Winter still exists.
We just went through a near four-week cold snap, with the worst overnight low being -41.9 Celsius, or as near to the same in Fahrenheit given that they're both equal at -40.

You can do 2 set of wheels - in a few months. Start by putting a set of 225/40s snows on the existing wheels. When spring comes you can either switch back to the OEM run flats (until they wear out) or leave the snows on and get a set or summer wheels. In other words you can put the decision off for a couple of months.
