As a former owner of a 2002 330xi the only minor disadvantages of the XI are slightly decreased gas mileage, an extra 200 pounds of weight, and it is much harder to intentionally oversteer the car and let the tail out when cornering .In the snow and heavy rain this obviously can be a great advantage of the XI.
Bottom line, both are great cars and I don't think you can go wrong with either. When I bought my 330i in July the XI was not out yet, otherwise I would have test driven both before I bought! |

I got mine 2 days ago and it's been great.
Before I got it, I was also concerned that maybe I would have less fun driving with AWD but not at all. It's very agile. I have loads of curves and hills all around me and the handlng is just pinpoint tight. I am coming from a BMW 528 which is far more responsive than most cars. The 325xi is an order of magnitude tighter. 18LLC, why did you get AWD in the Bay Area? For me, it was the combination of hills and snow. I'm guessing you drive up to the mountains? Or you concerned about Lombard Street?

No cons. My first car was a Subaru, so I love AWD.

I got mine about a month ago (moved up from a 2003 325xi to a E90 300xi). Just drove it in the snow this week in OH (first time in the snow with a manual also), and it worked great, I couldn't even get the traction control to kick in (tried flooring it in 2nd, car just went!) and I couldn't get the back end around. I did however end up testing the anti-lock brakes by accident.
In the dry I have noticed that it is more responsive on the curves then the 2003, maybe because of the wider 17" tires I have on this one. The power is definately there (and I'm still in the break in period). It is a blast to drive.... They are calling for a "major winter event" here this week so I'll try and get it out in a deserted parking lot and see how it responds (I always like to do that with any car so I know what it will do if some situation arises). But from what I've seen so for it's been great.

Thanks for all the feed back, guys. Looks like XI have no any issues (So far), just want to prepare myself to check the car when it comes, so I won’t miss any of the problem to fix it. The reason y I go for XI is because one of the BMW engineer told me that BMW’s AWD is the best, better than STi and EVO, it’s heavy duty truck system. Even I don’t know what is that mean, but who cares, it’s BMW!!!. BTW, my car just hit to the port this morning.

I too have ordered an xi. As far as the xdrive being the best AWD system, I beg to differ. I would say Acura's SH-AWD is better since it not only transfer power to the front and back, but also left and right. I'm pretty sure the xdrive just transfers power to the front and back only.

Don't fall for the marketing hype; BMW (and other car manufactuers) use the ABS to "transfer power"; by braking the wheel spinning until the spin stops. Honda/Acura's actually increases the power a little on the other wheel-marketing move only, since if they increased it substantially, it would make the only other gripping wheel spinn !! It was a nice attempt at getting some mileage out of a technology which they offered as mee too. PS. to this day, torsen AWD is the better system and to this day Audi makes the best of those. having said this, the Xdrive BMW offers is extremely good, and because the only differences are at the limit (extreme driving conditions) for most of us there will no be tangible disadvantage to the BMW system. When the x3 was introduced in europe, german tests were able to stomp the Xdrive by hitting the gas while trying to get out of a snow bank. The car would seize up and the computer would flash the yellow light. Apparently they had to wait 20-30 minutes for the computer to reset before being able to re-attempt to get the car out. Put about 750 miles on it in a week in Europe. I didn't notice much difference from the 330 SP RWD that I tested. I don't think I felt the bumps as much and didn't notice any weight issues. Biggest thing that I was concerned about was that it would be noticeably higher like the e46 versions, but it's not.

Seriously, I hardly notice the higher position compared to my e46 2 door. The handling is even more amazing then the e46, and comparable to the e90 325i I test drove. I love my e90xi, it flies.
