Just gone over 8500 miles, and car asked 1 litre of oil, so 7300 since oil change.

I understand it's possible, I just don't understand why they don't include both on M cars? The dipstick can't be that expensive. Enthusiasts have been complaining about this for years.

If they can make something electronic vs. mechanical they will. The dipstick tube has to seal against metal and that seal deteriorates with time. In one weekend at a BMW club race there were 3 or 4 racers who had oil leaks that were from the stupid o-ring that seals the bottom of the dipstick tube. It's a real PITA to get to. Sure, they are out of warranty and BMW sells the parts but I think they see the electronic meter as a way to minimize moving parts.
I'm not 100% sold on the idea but that's my take on it.

This quote comes to mind....

Thanks for the document. I thought this quote from the document was interesting

"Condensate that forms in the crankcase due to short distance driving can influence the permittivity. If the water is
mixed in the engine oil, it also collects around the oil condition sensor. If there is too much water in the crankcase:
In individual cases there can be an incorrect display of the oil level or a warning requesting that the oil be topped
up.
This ”false oil level warning” can be treated by means of a fault profile selection on the BMW diagnosis system,
whereby the permittivity of the oil is also evaluated. However, there is no direct display of the permittivity. The
permittivity depends on, among other things, the viscosity or age of the oil. This means that an appraisal of the
quality is not ensured in every case."

That's one of the problems I have with electronic dipsticks. I remember in another car I owned, water on the dipstick gave me an early warning that a lower intake manifold gasket was leaking. According to the BMW document, potentially the system would've prompted me to top off the oil.

I agree with some of the others. I'd like both electronic and a regular dipstick. If I had to choose just one, then I'd go with the regular dipstick.

5,600 Miles so far. 4,400 since run in service.

Not put any additional oil in yet but will need to soon.

Cars electronic gauge nearer minimum than maximum.

7800 km with track days and the oil level says that it is just a hair over max...

I don't know if it is broken or not... But the vehicle "should" eat a little oil and not display full all the time.

I agree that I am not 100 percent sold on the electronic version as it relates to M cars.... but for the general public.... A reminder of low oil from the car to the owner, the moment it happens is far better than relying on the idiot behind the wheel.

Cause for concern?

As mentioned earlier, my 1M looks like it will be asking for a top up soon.

I did not get a jobsheet with my 1,200 mile running in service as i am service inclusive. So today I called the dealer to confirm what oil they had put it in so I could match it.

They told me they had put it what BMW suggested, that which comes up into the computer automatically which was 10w-60. Castrol TWS Motorsport.

I was put through to parts but before confirming, I wanted to check back to see if this was correct.

I am now a little worried that I have The "wrong" stuff.

Can someone else (probably UK based), confirm what they had put in?

Is there a big difference between US and Europe?

I'm now worried they could have out the wrong diff/trans oils in too.

I phoned up a second time to confirm and spoke to someone else, they confirmed what the first tech said and they service manager overheard the conversation and also confirmed they had put the 10w-60 I'm and that this was correct.

Any help/advice much appreciated!

^^they used the wrong oil. A lot of dealers seem to "think" since its a M it should take M (TWS) oil. But the 1M does NOT!

Your car does not use TWS 10w60 but the same oil as a 135i uses: 0w40, 0w30 or 5w30 LL-4 full synthetic oil from BMW.

I would just change your oil.

That's Dack. That's what I had gathered from all the other threads on here which I checked first.

Is there a dealer service bulletin to reflect this as per diff oil?

I couldn't find any oil information in the supplemental 1M manual, only the regular 1er manual which is of course going to say use the regular 1er oil grade.

I have not seen anything in print on which engine oil is correct. I would love to see something though. I have only seen numerous posts about which oil is correct. I think DriveHard (he works for a dealer) has also confirmed that TWS oil is incorrect oil for the 1M. Maybe try to PM him.

You might also look under your hood. On the front cross brace on US spec cars there is this decall...

I don't think EU cars get this decall. ?

Have you seen this document from BMW-USA... BMW USA should really update this to include the 1M. But as you can see TWS oil does not list the N54B30A.

BMW USA reccoemended engine oil list...

http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...ngineOils.aspx

BMWCurrentListing_of_SyntheticOils.pdf

Last year I got this LL-4 list from my BMW Zentrum. That was before the 1M was out... but as you can see the N54 engine is listed in this document.

BMW approved motor oils... aka THE LIST!!!

I saw the synthetic oils info on the BMW USA website and understood this:

Quote:
BMW High Performance SAE 5W-30 Synthetic Oil* (BMW part number 07 51 0 017 866)

* Does not apply to M vehicles - see below
And then:

Quote:
The following is the only recommended and approved synthetic oil for BMW M (Motorsport) vehicles in the US market with gasoline engines, at the present time.
BMW Long-life rating LL-01 Synthetic Oils for BMW M vehicles equipped with S54, S62, S65 or S85 engines:

Castrol TWS Motorsport SAE 10W-60 Synthetic Engine Oil

Castrol Formula RS SAE 10W-60 Synthetic Engine Oil (BMW part number 07 51 0 009 420)

If Castrol High Performance Synthetic Oil is not available and you need to add oil between oil changes, only use synthetic oils with the following specifications for M vehicles:

Viscosity - preferred SAE 10W-60

Alternative - SAE 10W-40, SAE 5W-50 or SAE 10W-50
So the 1M is an M vehicle but does not have an M engine (S54, S62, S65 or S85)

Yup! No "S" engine designation. And since the 1M engine is based off of the N54... it needs N54 oil specs(!) not TWS(M oil) specs.

And for those dealers who say the 1M should use TWS oil... you should ask them what oil a Z4 35is should use as well? Because the 1M and the Z4 35is share the same engine. The 335is engine is close relative but not te same from what BMW people have told me.

Serice inclusive also, so no record of it for me. What I do know is that at the time, from the discussion I had with the master-technician (mostly around transmission oil...) that they used the correct stuff, based on what had been posted on this forum - wherever that was when I was looking!

Update

Car is at dealers today for flush of engine oil, they confirmed with Castrol that 10w-60 was incorrect and are putting in 0w-30 or 0w40.

Asked them to verify that they also put in the correct gearbox and diff oil while they have the car.

They also used the wrong oil for another customers 1M and are getting his car in too.

Hopefully they can sort out all my interior rattles in the process!

Will update again when I pick the car up.

I use Castrol Edge. 0w-40

The oil temps on track are little bit lower then with the 5w30.
