Need help! Glove box stuck or locked.

Here's the issue:
My wife tried to open the glove box on our 128i Cabrio today and couldn't open it. It was in the locked position - which is weird as I have never locked it with a key.
As well, we have used the glove box no more than 5 or 6 times since I bought the 1er back in April 2008 - and can't remember using it in the past 2 years.
I wouldn't even know how to lock it and had to read the Owners Manual to realize that it can be opened with the key in the integrated BMW key - but that didn't open the glove box.
When locked the lock slit is in the horizontal and the key will turn the lock 90 degrees to the vertical. The glove door handle will swing up 60 degrees (as it should when it's ready to open), but the glove box wouldn't open.
I tried googling and searching forums and see that there are issues with older bimmers particularly cabrios relative to stuck or locked glove boxes, but no one has an explanation or fix - and I'm not sure those issues would necessarily be relevant to the 1-series cabrios or coupes.
Does anyone know what may be going on or have any words of advice before I take it to the dealer for what could be a pricey repair?
TIA.

I don't thinked it's locked. Sounds more like something is jammed in there.

tested; horizontal - unlocked, vertical - locked , no change in motion of lever in either position ~ 35 Degrees. one just opens and one doesnt.

Muchas gracias, senor..
In the horizontal there was no give, so I had assumed that meant it was in the locked position.
Knowing that the horizontal was actually the open position, I put the lock slit into horizontal, pushed the glove box door in with a bit of pressure and simultaneously pulling on the handle with a little more force.
And that worked.
I suspect that there was too much crap in there (which I subsequently removed) which put pressure on the door and the tabs holding it closed.

So thanks, again.
