i wouldnt really bother with local, especially with high end large sizes. ive always saved about 40-50% with tirerack and it takes 5 days to arrive

just out of interest harills, what was the price u paid and size?
I'm not sure about the other brands but I received a quote from a local tyre place for some AD08's in 235/40/18 and 265/35/18 and got $340 each for the fronts and $400 each for the rears, all mounted, balanced, valves, etc. It's the only quote I got so I don't know how much cheaper they get in Sydney. That's looking at the total cost of $1480.

The same tyres on tirerack cost $1146 without shipping, customs, fitting etc.

It appears that for AD08's at least it's cheaper to just buy in Sydney.

They aren't sending Hankook, Yokohama or Toyo.

Everything else is ok.

When Tirerack ship tyres to you, do they ship direct to your door or do you have to go to the port or something to collect them?

Cant you have them send them individually, thus avoiding gst? That's what I had done in the past

then u pay for individual shipping which will be about usd$200 a tyre.
alternatively, if ur getting expensive tyres, then i have had 2 sent to my business address, making sure the cost of tyres is under $1000, and 2 sent to home address.

usually, its difficult to buy tyres from tirerack that are over usd$500 ea. most of the high end ones at 19" and 20" are still under $500 ea.

this is teh easiest way around the $1000 threshold. paying for 2 tyres costs about $250-300 shipping, paying for 4 tyres costs about $350 shipping.
eitehr way, its way better than paying near $800-1000 a tyre locally for the same stuff

Is that $1000 including shipping costs then you have to pay duty or is the $1000 threshold excluding shipping costs? I cant remember...

Anyone know if duty is calculated upon the full price inc shipping costs or just the tires themselves?

Basically if u buy $950 worth of tyres for example, and then add shipping, then no taxes or duties, even tho ur over $1000. the goods themselves were t over $1000. If u buy $1010 worth of tyres, then the duties apply to tyres and shipping, but on some occasions customs don't check it, they have literally thousands of items to thru and can't check everything.

P&H is included unfortunately! (you pay duty on the subtotal, cost of the goods and the p&H)

Edit: sometimes it slips through customs no charge
Mine slipped through customs last time
