secret decoder ring
I get a kick out of people who post on this site and refer to their cars and engines as E82, E88, N35, etc. While these are perfectly legitimate engineering and manufacturing codes they just sound silly and childish when naming your cars. You own or lease a One Series BMW. It's either a 128i or 135i. Either a coupe or convertible. Why not use these designations?
When you say E82, E88, etc. its seems as if your trying to show that you're in some secret kids club. Do you have a sign that says, "Boyz only, no gurlz allowed?" Do you drive with secret Captain BMW roundel goggles? A blue and white superhero cape? Do you communicate with your secret decoder ring you got by sending in the tops of several BMWs? It just has such a precious, pretentious and childish attitude. |

E82, E88, etc refer to chassis. There's also codes for the engines, such as N54, N55, etc. If I say simply 1-series or even 135i you won't know enough details to help me with my question. Saying E82 (if the issue is chassis-related) or N55 (if the issue is engine related) is more descriptive. For example, saying that my previous car was a e46 is more descriptive that saying that it was a 3-series. |

Wow! I didn't know it would be so easy to yank your chains.
BMWs are great cars and great fun to drive but I didn't realize they were part of such a religious experience. Very cult like. I still would like someone to tell me exactly (be very precise) why E82 or E88 is a better way of describing your car than 128i or 135i. Do you guys have a secret handshake too? Relax and lighten up, it's just a car. |

lol, op is a tool and must be new to the bimmer scene. Calling a car by its chassis code name makes it very easy for others to understand which exact bmw they currently drive or use to drive. For instance, if I say, man I miss my e46, people already know that it was a 3 series between the years of 99-04.
OP needs to gtfo. Probably just another badge whore that bought his entry level bmw to seem cool to his or her friends. DIAF OP.

You made such a big deal over nothing, and now you are biting back when we share our opinions about your opinion? Apparently you don't read, its been explained to your several times in this thread. So let me clarify it for you. Otherwise you'll continue to look like a tool in front of everyone. Saying 135i, for example, isn't enough. Saying 135i gives the entire range from 2008-2012 models, which is every model of 135i made for the US. Saying N55, instead, now limits it down to 2010+ models. Gotta keep in mind that not every model of 135i is the same. There are 2 different engine types, N54 and N55. Those are important to know because the 2 engines are very different from one another. Same goes for E82 (coupe), E88 (convertible) and E87 (hatchback). It is important to distinguish which version of 135i you are trying to talk about. Use this exercise: Give me options on an intake for my 135i. Now what are you going to tell me? Because I never narrowed it down to which year or engine, you could give me answers that wouldn't be compatible with my car. If I would have said: Give me options for an intake for my N55 135i, then you can narrow it down. Because intakes for an N54 motor will not work with an N55 motor. Understand now??? |

Now I understand. If you said 3 series sedan and gave me the year I wouldn't have any idea what your car was like. For all I'd know it might have been a pickup truck or maybe an electric golf cart. You're right, E46 is MUCH more precise a description.

Or you could just learn the lingo and go with it.
Nevermind, I give up. Yes, we have a secret decoder ring. Mine is pretty badass. And because you made this thread complaining about it, you don't get one. |

Well, not to be mean to the OP. its a legit question.
Here is an example. If you say, I love my 330i which one are you talking about? There is the 2006 330i which is an E90, and there is also the previous generations 330i. If you say E90, we know which one you are talking about. When the next generation comes out, saying I love my 128i is very different. We could be talking about the E82 with the inline 6 engine, or the new F20 with the 4 cylinder turbo. It just helps differentiate more

I believe MB and Audi people also refer to their vehicle's in code name...it makes it easier to identify specific models. Especially when you're shopping for parts.

I just hope people would learn their engine chassis first then joint the forum otherwise you don't deserve to own or drive a BMW.

This line alone says it all, you don't deserve your E88 N52 Bimmer. In my book anyone who call a BMW "just a car" just doesn't get it which explains why he created this useless thread. Go get a Honda or Toyota and carry on.
